P2 in Space - the Red Bull Stratos Project

Hey, BG. Can you post the scheduled time for the next attempt when you get a chance, so I can try to mark it? I always miss stuff like this :)

Dissappointing. So tired. Maybe he should try going where there isn't any wind...

Must be hard with the sponsorship needing it to be broadcast (and hence scheduled in advance) when you're dealing with something as fickle as weather. On the other hand it wouldn't be happening without sponsorship and Red Bull probably gets enough publicity with every attempt to keep funding it. Hopefully next time.

Which camera systems are you using Barry?

The 2 mph restriction on wind velocity is pretty severe, not to mention the fact that is extends to 800 feet. Early morning when the air is still you may still have a moving layer up above. Too bad they can't fly the box at the balloon fiesta on the way out.

Yeah, this is exactly the situation. In the smaller balloons we had more leeway, but with this massive monster (30 million cubic feet, taller than the Statue of Liberty and as wide as a football field) the requirements are extremely tight, you need a huge column of still air. Thing is, we had it today -- for a while, just not *quite* long enough. It was quiet enough to give the go-ahead, quiet enough to start inflation, but not quite long enough for us to be able to get all the way to launch. It was really close though! It makes us optimistic for the next time.

Hope everyone understands I can't announce or reveal anything until it's been made publicly available on redbullstratos.com (or, obviously, that it's made publicly available because you all happened to watch it live on the broadcast, like what happened today)...

Indeed I will attempt to keep you informed. The go-ahead might be given with relatively short notice however; we usually get a briefing the night before the morning of the launch attempt. We will hear things such as "Wednesday is not looking favorable" (meaning, yes, Oct. 10th is not a launch option) or that "Thursday is a possibility" or whatever, but we won't really KNOW until we get the formal weather briefing the evening before the morning, as to whether it's really looking so favorable that we will be making an attempt.

So when I know something that is also publicly releasable, I'll pass it on!

Fortunately I never missed it (unfortunate for you guys, Barry). Hopefully someone will update this thread when things start happening again.

For those who want to follow along, apparently Servus TV is offering a live broadcast beginning at about 12:30 a.m. The voiceover is all in German, but you can see all the activity on the flight line, and maybe hear the radios and communications under the voiceover...

In the US, I think the Velocity channel is picking up the live broadcast shortly before takeoff. At least, that's what they did on the last attempt. Velocity is one of the Discovery Channel's family of channels.

If I know I'm blatantly on camera, I'll try to flash a DVXUser "gang sign" as a shout-out to y'all...

Wait, I know:
