P2 Card series explanation

Can anyone explain the differences between the various P2 card series? I have been away from this for a while and last time I looked there was just (or so I thought) R and E series. Now I find F series and A series (with a black label like my R series).

The questions I'd most like answering are:

Can I use cards with larger capacity than 32GB in my HVX 200

Can I use F Series cards in my HVX 200?

Are R-series cards fast enough to record AVC-Intra 100/200?

Which is the fastest card?

What is and A-series card?

Thank you

1. Yes.
2. Yes
3. Yes, for AVCI-100. Maybe not for AVCI-200
4. The MicroP2 are the fastest, followed by the E series, then the A series, then the R series
5. A is a faster version of the R series.

A and R are SLC memory, with 100,000 rewrite cycles lifespan. E series are MLC memory, with a "5 year, once a day" rewrite lifespan.

Off the top of my head I don't know what's different about the F series. Looking at Panasonic's site, they say F series will support AVCI-200, but they list the maximum transfer rate as the same as the E series (1200mbps) so ... I don't know.

The claim on the Amazon listing for the F-Series cards are that they have a 1.2 Gbps transfer rate.

Has anyone tested the offload speed of the F-series versus the older models, with DVCProHD. I've been considering ditching my trusty old HVX for something newer, but if these cards are faster I might wait another year or two.

The "E" and "F" series did add substantially faster transfer rates. As far as offload speeds, it all depends on what you're offloading to, and how... if you're using a USB reader, or offloading to a USB drive, you won't notice any difference at all. If you're offloading through a PCMCIA slot directly to a four-disk SATA RAID, then yes you'll see much faster transfers from "E" or "F" cards. I've seen a 64gb "E" card offloaded to a RAID in 7 minutes or less.

Anyone have a link to the latest HVX200 upgrade firmware to allow 64GB F-Series P2 Cards? I just bought 64GB F-Series cards and my HVX200 cameras are not recognizing them. When inserted, the green light blinks but the No P2 Card symbol shows in the viewfinder. Is there an firmware upgrade to the HVX200 that I need? I can not find anything on Panasonic's website and all links from this forum are broken. I might message you Barry. Perhaps a new sticky should be created so that others don't have this issue with using their HVX200 cameras with the newer series, larger P2 cards. Thanks!

Barry, do you know if the F series has the same 5 year longevity rating as the E series?

Wasn't that based on a "cycle" a day?

My oldest set of cards is nine years old. My second set is eight. Probably helps that for about the first three years, with one of my cams, it was almost exclusively shooting on a clients cards. And I have all of my cards numbered so that I can rotate them to keep wear as even as possible.

Is there a utility available on Mac to check P2 card health/cycle count, etc?
