P2 Card hack

So if a P2 card is a just a housing with a raid controller and 4 SDHC cards... whats stopping someone from opening one up and adding larger capacity cards?

Has anyone tried this? I was thinking about getting a 4GB P2 card just to test it out.

The RAID controller is controlled by a built-in firmware that is only aware of the card specs that are installed. The best you could probably hope for is to replace the SDHC cards with other cards of the same size (which would only useful to replace a defective one). The only way you could even possibly (and this is a far reaching possibility) upgrade a P2 card is if you could somehow flash it with the firmware of a larger card -- which would almost certainly invove desoldering a surface mounted flash chip and reprogramming it with a specialized reader...

In short, I can't imagine it being worth the time to try.

You cannot do it.

And I am pretty sure they are using a different method of getting the memory in there with at least the 32gig cards and possibly the 16gig cards too. Meaning, it is no longer 4 SDHC cards RAIDed together IIRC.
