I shot footage on a P2, loaded it onto my mac. It is now saved as .dmg files. FCP won't recognize them. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this situation. Thank you very much.

You say you have 5.1, which version do you have precisely? Considering the magnitude of the upgrade, you really should use your Software Update (in your system preferences) to update your Final Cut Pro to 5.1.2. This is a big improvement for being able to use P2 card footage in FCP. So first and foremost I recommend upgrading your Final Cut Pro to the absolute latest version (its a free update if you have 5.1 already). As for the disk images...

Open up your hard drive (your boot drive if you have more than one on the desktop). Go into your Applications folder. At the bottom of that go into the Utilities folder. Inside of there look for and open up the Disk Utility application.

In the right hand column it should list your .DMG files. Select one and then at the top click on the button that says Mount. Do this for all of your .DMG files.

Open up Final Cut Pro (hopefully 5.1.2 at this point). Create your new project if it hasn't already done that for you. Go to Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup (or just press Control + Q). Look through the pull down menu for DVCPro HD 720p24 (I'm going on the guess that you shot using 720p24, if not, select whichever one does correspond to your shooting settings). Click Setup.

Now go to File > Import > Panasonic P2. This is your "logging" window for footage. Here you can import all your stuff and break it down into named clips and bins and all the like for easier editing later on. If you need help using this window at all just ask, there are plenty around that can help (I think BenB and Filmstox have been the first to really delve into this new window for the P2 media).

Good luck.

cheers.

The .dmg file is a disk image file. Double click it and it'll decode and show up as an actual mounted hard drive. Get your data from there. The .dmg file by itself will not be readable by anything. All you have to do is double click the .dmg file, you don't have to go through all the Disk Image steps to do it.
