P2 Alternatives

What are my alternatives to recording to a P2 card?

I'm considering getting a 16 gig card which will run me $900. Is there a cheaper way to go besides a 4 or 8 gig card?

I checked into HD Monitor Pro but it doesn't record 720p 24pn, which is how I plan on shooting.

Firestore or direct capture to laptop.

pn modes are not able to be carried via a firewire stream, due to the limitations of firewire... The only difference between pn and non-pn modes is that it saves space, which is more of a concern with p2 cards, not with direct capture.

The firestore will do a pn like mode where it only records the flagged frames, thereby giving you added record time on it as well.

it's p2, direct capture to laptop, or firestore. Those are your options.

Use Adobe OnLocation and your recording is free. You could also consider the FireStore, but I heartily recommend the P2 cards over the FireStore for everyone except those who need the FS-100's unique capabilities.

Not yet, maybe someday, who knows. There are other programs for the Mac that do some of the same things OnLocation does, like HD Monitor Pro and ScopeBox.

Get the 16GB P2 card, you won't be sorry,

I was nervous spending $1800 on two of them, but after getting them, it was worth every penny!!!!!

I LOVE THE WORKFLOW when using p2 cards.

I must say I've heard every one talk about "the work flow" ooh and ahhh for a while before I got a hold of mine. All I can say is oooh and ahhhh! Now I need another one so I don't have to stop the production for 15 min to download.

+1

I got rid of my FS-100 when the 16s came out. With 4 16s and 2 8s I am good to go. Love the workflow.

if you ever shoot in the field, shooting direct to a computer is very unwieldy if not down right impractical...

get the p2 card. get two so you dont have to shut down shooting while you transfer to a laptop

I'm doing a doc so diret to laptop will be acceptable for interviews. I'm trying to figure out how to go to 2 ext. hard drives at once.

Yeah generally you need two cards for an effective workflow. We have two now, my next two shipped from B&H on Thursday or Friday, so I should have them by next week sometime. Four 16 gig cards will be PLENTY for what we do, actually we never really need more than two but we have two HVX200s so if we use both of them we'll need 'em.

Why not just record to a laptop? I recorded an interview to my macbook and to be safe I also recorded to the P2 and backed that up to the p2store so I had a redundant recording.. I believe you can do this now with Premiere..

What happens if you just hook up a mobile (battery powered) Firewire disk to the HVX200?

Would that be a cheap alternative to a firestore?

There are sata drives up to 1.5 terrab. now. They all need low current and voltage - so they can be driven by an extra battery pack. Wit a firewire to sata adapter you can connect the camera (if that works at all)

Thanks, Frank

You can't take a plain hard drive and have it record DVCProHD video. Firewire drives expect SBP2 commands, not a video stream.

Hi,
i own a 12" PowerBook G4 (1ghz) with 1,25gb of Ram and an Nvidia GeForce Go5200 (32mb).
Could anyone tell me if that laptop is enough to manage direct capture via firewire (using an HVX200)? or i need a more powerful one?

thanks to all
