P.o.v

Hi there.....

I'm planning on shoting alot of P.O.V. sequenceson my dvx. And now comes the question...? What is best to use a regular steadicam ala stediacam jr or a body mounted thin like a dvrig? Has anyone got any experience in P.O.V. I need to shot alot of stuff in P.O.V. and it is neccesary that the camera is held in the level of a normal persons viewingangle.....

Thanks alot.

It really depends. Depends on what kind of shots you are going for and also what kind of look you are going for because there is a more steady "handheld" look and there's also a more "handheld" handheld look and both can be accepted as handheld given the situation.

For instance, if it was an action movie and you're running down some hill or something, it would be perfectly understandable if you went truly handheld with it and show the bumps and rocks. On the otherhand, if you were making a family drama film and just wanted to show a POV shot of someone walking through a house, maybe a steadicam would suit you better.

Personally I think, barring aside the extremes which I listed above, most normal "POV" shots have a feel kind of in the middle between handheld and steadicam. It's not as shaky as handheld but not as smooth as steadicam. Which is why I think whatever you pick, you would lean it towards the other. What I mean is that if you go handheld, make it as steady as you can. And if you are using steadicam, make it less smooth than you normally would. Personally, I'm cheap and I use the first one cuz it's free and I've been pretty happy with my shots.

Thanks alot. I get that the situation is "inbetween 2 chairs" and i have to choose. It's quite hard, because the thing I am doing is ONLY P.O.V., which in my case means thats the moods, actions and the movements of my person change. Hmmnn, what to choose?
