Overlapping in FCP

I've been trying to make it so that 2 images overlap each other, but, become translucent so that you can see both clips on top of each other. I tried playing around with the opacity but it seems that my images get really dark and almost unrecognizable.

Any help?

try right clicking on the clips and try various combinations of "Composite Modes" on each of the clips and see if that helps.

You may have to manipulate the image in Photoshop first somehow if that doesn't work.

Put one clip on V1 track the other over it on V2 track.
turn view overlays on, grab transparency line on V2
reduce as needed. Leave V1 alone.

I just tried it, works fine.

I think that's what he was talking about when he said that he's been playing around with the opacity.

If you place a white matte on V1 and then use track V2 and V3 to place your video over the matte, you can play with opacity without it getting dark. Problem with using the opacity is that it will be opaque to black (well not actually black..just an absence of pixel values) and that is causing your darkening of the clips as you slide the opacity down..
