Your input greatly appreciated. I posted a few shots, scenes I am interested in doing sometime soon.

I am interested in ramping up my lighting skills and purchasing equipment to achieve that, if need be.

Thus far, most of my lighting experience is with interview lighting and some very closeup make-up, beauty lighting.

I currently get a lot of use from:

2- Lowel prolights
     day gels
1- Lowel Rifa light ( softbox, 500 watts )
Egg crates(40 degrees) and day gels
1-Cool Lux SL3000 "hollywood softlight" (100 watts )

reflectors
foamcore
diffusion papers

Re: Overhead lighting, bedroom stuff>>SAMPLE

Both the product shot and the talent shots in the Maybelline ad look like they were done with large overhead softboxes.  It also wouldn't be uncommon to have some small hard accent lights to add sparkle to the eyes, although I can't tell if it was done here.  Your Rifa might be a bit small to replicate the effect with the models, but you could buy a second softbox and use them next to each other to make one very large soft lightsource.

For the bed shot, there are two main light sources.  One is fairly low and from the right side of the frame.  It's a hard source, but not completely so.  It's definitely flagged off very precisely.  Maybe a fresnel with some light diffusion. The second main source sweeps over the body and looks like a very focussed instrument like a fresnel in spot mode.  The sweeping lightsource is located in the direction of the talent's feet and maybe 30-40 degrees up.

The Pantene ads look like at least some of the shots were done with beauty dishes--hard lights fired into large white or silver shallow pan shaped reflectors.  It looks like they're using a lot of lights here with probably several for just the hair highlights.

Thanks, Barry-
for taking the time to take a shot at the samples and offer your thoughts.

I've spent a lot of time considering how these looks were done and am trying to narrow down the equipment to experiment on my own with.

As one finds out in lighting, there is no " do this and do that" perfectly precise recipe..but it definitely helps to head somewhere in the right direction.

any other takers?

I know I will at least need to get a boom of some sort, among a few other pieces.

heck, if anyone knows of a knowledgeable sales person for lighting please let me know.

so far, I've just been reading stuff and studying product manuals.

I would invest in some Flags and C Stands (Something I am looking to do in FEB) to better control the light.

What is the difference/advantage of a C-stand vs. a boom ( for a light?)

Re: Overhead lighting, bedroom stuff>>SAMPLE

I think the C Stand shows more versatility not just with the lighting, but with additions of flags, cookies and whatever other nonsense you can imagine rigging up.

I would get the boom too though; I was just offering some advoce for control!

Re: Overhead lighting, bedroom stuff>>SAMPLE

I agree fully with Barry. I think the Pantene ad has had some extensive lighting and flagging, and I also think that some of the shots with the model looking directly at the lens at eye-level were done with a balcar fashion box, which is like a big softbox with no silk on the front, where the camera actually looks through the box, and at the model. That way the light surrounds the model from all sides and fills her face in very well. It also makes wonderful healthy hair highlights on properly treated hair. Her hair was probably styled for hours to get that perfect sheen when she flips it up. Also the model's bone structure and makeup, then subsequent post-house tweaking play a great deal into the success of certain specialized lighting. I have seen DP's take 7 hours to light a hamburger for a major chain. :D The "bun" expert had a stash of 50 perfect "buns" so that if one gets nicked during lighting, a new one can be brought in. Then there was the pickle guy and the cheese man. ;D This is for real. The first time I saw that it took all I had not to laugh. Then you look at the commercial, and you say, "Man the cheese man wasn't on the ball that day, but boy those pickles look great..." Now that's a job! Those things really do add to the commercial, tho. Makes you want to grab the burger through the screen. A shoe commercial had three full time polishers... ;D

now, I am officially overwhelmed.

if you have a ton of time, this site:

http://www.photoflex.com/

has a bunch of cool things..of note, the photos of product set ups. excellent.

Re: Overhead lighting, bedroom stuff>>SAMPLE

That'd be the one! ;D Good show, man, I had spent 20 minutes trying to find that balcar link for you guys, but to no avail. Beautiful light comes out of those things. They use them on a lot of music videos. I saw them in the behind the scenes. They also have one as big as a jet engine, twice as high as a person, that delivers the same light from twice the distance, so you can do big performance WS's.

What is cool about the hex softboxes is the highlights in the eyes look more natural than the square boxes.

Try the www.Westcott.com they also have cool stuff.

Is there a disadvantage to a hex softbox? I still haven't bought one, and was looking at thos photoflex ones.

From what I can tell, NOT MUCH.

marketing lingo says stuff like it is shaped so that the lighting "wraps around the face" better. that sort of stuff.

I called Chimera to get info on their new Octaplus box and the rep said it is basically a large spread of light (their smallest in this model is 3ft wide, largest is 7 feet that does what all soft boxes do. The advantage to it is that the catch light in the eyes is a little nicer and the light spread is quite wide. the look of the catchlights will be roundish, like natural, not rectangles. if you are doing close up headshots, it might make a difference. a lot of people in fashion are into these, some say it is because it "looks cool." I looked at photoflex octadome nxt. Looks promising too.

--In this type of box, if it not well made, smartly sewn and put together, could be a hell hole to set up. you have several rods to connect.

THanks. When the time comes maybe that's what I'll go with.

what lights/lighting setup do you think they used?

this is a good example of how you can see right into the eye.

Re: Overhead lighting, bedroom stuff>>SAMPLE

thanks for the link to that power of lighting handbook.

i love stuff like that with diagrams.

walter graff has a newsletter like that and i love getting a new issue and seeing how closely i can reproduce the featured lighting setup.

btw, if your near nyc he is having a lighting seminar saturday.

i'm hoping to gain a LOT of lighting knowledge because lighting is still my weakest skill out of all this.

Re: Overhead lighting, bedroom stuff>>SAMPLE

Octaboxs happen to be currently in vogue, but they're really not all that different from rectangular softboxes. Before softboxes were popular, everyone was bouncing into umbrellas. When softboxes came out, everyone said, great!, now we have more natural rectangular highlights in the eye--just like from a window. :D

Pooh--on your eye grab, it looks like they were using "butterfly" lighting. There are 2 softboxes placed fairly low and pointing up at the talent and there's at least 1 higher softbox angled down. This is very nice soft lighting for good looking talent. If the talent is older and has neck wrinkles or a double chin, you'd want to avoid any low lights angled up.
