Any good ideas to a DIY overhead silk that:

1. doesn't broke my wallet
2. can be set with a couple of good tripods
3. can cover a fair amount of space for the amount...
4. ...of space it will occupy inside a VW passat van once folded
5. has a good index of light transmission yet with good difusion

Thank you

Make a frame out of PVC pipe. Buy a shower curtain that will fit the frame. Clamp the curtain on with whatever you have, or pick up some cheap clams at a hardware store. If you get creative with T joints you could build the whoe thing with PVC and have the thing rotate a bit. To save on total space get joints so you can break the large sections in half.

Suggested parts: (4) 4 ft. 1.5" PVC pipes for the length (or whatever diameter you need)
(4) 2 ft. 1.5" PVC pipes for the sides
(2) couplers to join the length 4 ft. pipes
(2) T joints for the smaller ones to connect to the base.
You get the idea.

When you get the shower curtain one thing to try would be to cut little holes all around the edges/corners, but first reinforcing them with gaff tape or something of the sort. Then you can string rope in these holes and use that to tie it around your frame.

Just look very closely at a real 6x frame and soft goods, it's not too hard to replicate using cheap-o things.

Thanks once again

Used parchute for fabric. Try to find one without blood stains... Seriously though, you can often find old parachutes for cheap. White silk is great. Just put it on a frame.

Lots of DPs are using unbleached muslin as reflector / white fills. The resulting color is fantastic for flesh tones.
