Overexposure Indoors Looking Out

Hi, I can't figure out for the life of me how to do this, if possible. I'm new with the camera. I'm shooting indoors, and on brighter days, the windows are way over exposed (just incredibly bright). I've tried adjusting the iris and the shutter, but then the indoor area is too dark. Is there any way else to try and adjust this strictly with the camera functions? Or am I SOL and need extra lighting or something???

Thanks for any input!

What camera? Some cameras have auto modes for spot light or something, but I assume that's not the case. But I'd say you're SOL.

Wait until it's darker outside, or gel the windows. Alternatively, light the room until you're blind.

No, video has a limitation on how much of a difference you have have between highlights
and shadows. On the DVX, properly tweaked and low-contrast is about six f/stops from
one end to the other. You could add more light indoors and/or use ND gel on the
outside of the windows or using "nets" on the outside of the windows.
See American Grip for examples of ND gel and net materials. Or, any basic
light and grip store. Hope this helps. Others can explain in detail exactly what
you need to do... But I think a Google search for Neutral Density gel and Nets/Scrims
should provide the information you seek this fine morning.

For an idea of that Neutral Density gel can do for you, imagine your indoor windows had
a tint on them like car windows do. That's like ND... kind of. Except ND doesn't alter colors.

So, outside appears "darker" and you fill the inside with a little more light. The idea is to
balance your exposures so it falls within that six stop latitude range of video.

Make the bright areas darker and the dark areas brighter. It's all about balance.
Does this make sense?

Hmmmm...you guys confirmed it for me, thanks. I had a thought that maybe I was asking too much out of the camera. I just thought maybe since I'm new wih the DVX, i'm missing something.

Your guys' suggestions make a lot of sense. Brian, Aaron, I appreciate it! You guys are up way too late also!
