Overcranking on HVX sound solutions?

So I'm getting ready to work on a short for school and I've decided that Overcranking my HVX with an acquisition frame rate of 30 fps and a playback frame rate at 24pn - but I know i read somewhere in the Barry Green book, he says that when overcranking you forfeit the ability to record audio tracks onto the footage. Of course I can't find where in the book it said it now, so maybe i'm just nuts and thats not the case, but if it is...what are some simple, yet solid ways to record the audio separately from the P2 deck? should i just use a field audio recorder, lay down the tracks in FCP and adjust its speed accordingly to 1.25%? (obviously the audio will be skewed a bit but i don't mind that).

Yes to the portable recorder, but as for 1.25% speed variance I am not sure. I know that many suggest the H4n, and I have one, but I would use a little better recorder like the Tascam HD-P2 or the R-4, or the R-44. It all depends on the budget you are dealing with.

yea, The R-44 is quite a bit out of my price range right now and i saw the HD-P2 on B & H but for just a school project i think i'll wait for a bigger budget project for something like that...A friend of mine has the H4n...i know he likes it, maybe i'll see if i can borrow it or just pick on up of my own. Thanks!

The reason it forfeits the audio is because it won't match up anyway. Overcranked footage plays back in slow-mo, so -- what are you going to do with the audio? If it's dialogue, you'll be hosed, because you're certainly not going to want to listen to dialogue played back slowed down 20%, are you?

No need to record to a separate deck if you don't want to. If you want variable frame rates and recorded audio together, don't use pN mode, use either 720/30p mode (still at 24fps) or shoot 1080/30p mode. Run the footage through Cinema Tools to extract pulldown and conform to 24fps. You'll have slow-mo footage, and audio. But, of course, the audio won't match up, because the footage will be slow-mo.

Thanks Barry, yeah i thought it said something about it still being possible if i did it in "p" instead of "pn" since it was going over 60. I'm a little hesitant to use "p" because i still haven't gotten a larger p2 card and I know how frustrated people can get on student projects when you have to keep dumping your footage every hour or so. But thanks for the tip!

As far as using the recording as a final track, I was more asking just so that i could have a diagetic reference track. Other times that i've overcranked, the footage was meant purely as a visual with completely different audio mixes. So, I didn't need to have any reference for audio but for possible foley purposes and such i would imagine it could be quite helpful.

But its nice to know that I can still record it in "p" mode - if my crew (and actors more specifically) don't mind waiting around a bit more - and I don't need to buy a separate recorder.

Thanks guys!
