Whereas there are a lot of tools available for overclocking in Windows, it is a fruitless task looking for similar applications for Mac OS X. This has all changed now. The ZDNet Clock tool for Mac Pro raises the frequency of the processor, FSB and memory.
Sounds good to me.

whats overclocking

Running the system at a speed that's faster than it's technically supposed to run at.

For example, if you have a 3 Ghz processor and run it at 3.5 Ghz (arbitrary numbers), then you're overclocking the system.

The stipulations are heat caused by running the processor faster than it should theoretically be run at, which is solved by various means from adding more air flow all the way to liquid Nitrogen or other type refrigerant.

You can also overclock various other components of the computer system, such as you Graphics Processor.

I gave this a try and my mac pro keeps crashing on anything above the stock speed, trashed it. maybe its works for some people but not for me

This is a BAD idea in every way. All the apps you're using on the Mac are tested at the processor's stock speeds only, they are going to have weird and crashy results overclocked. Also you're likely voiding your warranty by doing this. Overclocking is useful in the PC world- mostly for playing video games with higher system requirements than you can afford. But on the Mac it risks damage to your projects and your gear for little benefit.
