I live in australia and it is imposible to buy any kind of guns except cap guns. So I pondering an action movie but will only go ahead if i can make realistic muzzel flash on my home made sci-fi guns.

How would i go about makeing my home made guns shoots a large over the top muzzel flash.

I do not want to use any CGI muzzel flash.

The safest way is to go with a micro butane torch and run a metal tube out through the barrel. Rent "Logan's Run" to see how they did it. It looks really cool as long as the actor pulls it off, pulls trigger and vibrates hand mildly. Key here is mild.

To the tripod or shoulder rig, attach a cordless 12V screw driver with a slightly lopsided piece of wood in its teeth, so it wobbles the camera mildly but consistently. Rent "Private Ryan" to see that effect everytime Tom Hanks fires his Army issue tommy gun, especially when diverting attention from the MG42 nest as his men run for better position.

Then add a camera flash or strobe, in front of the actor as if he is shooting at it, to mimic the light on the actor's face. Turn everything on, light torch, and when you call action, the actor has to react to the camera flash only. That is his cue. In post, you will see a frame of bright light hitting the face, then next frame the actor's reaction starts, which is natural.

In post, add very very good stereo gun fire Sound FX. Combination of all these factors, good lighting, composition, trained actors, rehearsed cameraman, and good editing will sell the piece

Or just come here and do it, we love guns here

Can I just say that you may be better off with a very simple cg muzzle flash... I'm a professional fight director, so have some small experience in this area.

Chuck a few flashes together in photoshop and import them into your timeline as layered stills and play with their transparency. Even real gun fire is a pain in the ass as the camera doesnt always pick up the flash. At least doing it in post guarantees you it will work. Shoot using a flash gun on the day to mark the shots and this will help later... Not what you want to hear but its my recommendation, for good safe gunplay... cheers
