Outputting the highest quality HD for play on a PS3

Ok, here's what I am trying to do.. we have two options..

We are putting together some scenes and outttakes of my film to show at the wrap party on a 8 ft HD projector/screen. It has a HDMI connection and standard composite connectors. I was thinking would it be possible to use my PS3 and play the footage straight off a USB drive, and if it is possible would it be "full" HD, and what settings would I need to export the footage to in final cut/compressor to do so? If not, the other option is burning a blu ray, which I've never done but we have a pc with a blu ray burner.

Is the projector "full HD"? Unless the projector can accept and display 1080p it won't matter what your file is. I have had success playing some files off of my PS3 at both 720p and 1080p resolutions. Rather than playing them from a HDD or a thumb drive, I copy the file to the PS3. Here are some codec/containers the PS3 can play:
- MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
- MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
MP4 file format
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)

Choose one of those in compressor and try it out.
Another option, rather than making a file would be creating an AVCHD disc. This allows for up to roughly 22-30 minutes (depends on bitrate I believe) to be burned in HD on a standard single layer DVD, for playback in compatible blu-ray players. You can create these right in FCP with the share option, or in Toast 9-10, as long as you have the HD plug-in.

FCP cannot make a disc in HD (obsolete HD-DVD notwithstanding). You can export a full res MOV from FCP, move to a PC into Encore and author a bluray disk there. But as abeas pointed out, your delivery system has to support BD all the way through.

Otherwise, just make a Standard Def DVD. It will get up-rezzed to whatever it can by the system you have.

If you have FCP 7 and a Blu-Ray burner, you can make a Blu-Ray in HD. Directly from FCP, or via Compressor. I've done it for screeners, they came out fine. Look up "Share" in your FCP manual.
