Outputting 2:3:3:2 to Tape

Hello.

I need to output a 2:3:3:2 movie back to tape for archival purposes.

I converted the original finished 23.98 fps project to a 2:3:3:2 movie using DV Film Maker. I then imported the converted footage in FCP HD.

Are my FCP settings correct to accomplish this task? They are as follows:

- System Settings
- Playback Control tab
RT - Safe
Video Quality - High
Pulldown Pattern - 2:3:3:2
Frame Offset - 4 (should this be set to zero?)

- Timeline RT tab/menu
- Safe RT
- Playback Video Quality - Medium (there is no other option)
- Record to Tape - Full Quality

- Sequence Settings
- Field Dominance - Lower (even)
- Timeline - NonDrop Frame

- DVX is in VCR mode
- Timecode - NonDrop Frame

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: Outputting 2:3:3:2 to Tape

You can set playback prefs to 2:3:3:2 and do a Print to Video from the original sequence to firewire. No need to go through DVFilmmaker unless you want to save it as a QT with 2:3:3:2 from DVFilmmaker.
If you're trying to dump the DV Filmaker 2:3:3:2 result then just put it in a normal 29.97 sequence and don't add any pullback on playback to firewire.
Note that if you re-import from thsi tape you'll need to remove advanced pulldown again to get back to true original 23.98
For just video display archiving you can playback at 2:3:2:3
If this is a finished project you should probably also make a digital copy of the finished project in QT.

Re: Outputting 2:3:3:2 to Tape

Thanks very much for the reply.

Actually, I must use the DVFilmmaker software due to the fact that my dual 533 is not fast enough to create a 2:3:3:2 dv stream in realtime.

If you're trying to dump the DV Filmaker 2:3:3:2 result then just put it in a normal 29.97 sequence and don't add any pullback on playback to firewire.
Yep, that's exactly what I am trying to do. So you are saying I should set the timeline playback to 2:3:2:3?

I have also burned a 23.98 QT file to DVD (as data) for archival purposes. However, I feel better knowing I can retrieve the finished 23.98 project from tape in the future.

Just to double check, the DVX should be set to record nondrop frame timecode, right? Or, should it be set to tc regen?

Thanks for your time.

Re: Outputting 2:3:3:2 to Tape

If you've already done the conversion in DV film maker then it should import at 29.97 (check the clip properties) and it should ignore the add pulldown for playback since it's not changing the speed to go out. Make sure the sequence is 29.97 normal DV as well.

DVX always shoots in non drop frame timecode when in 24 mode (p or pa) regardless of what you have set on the camera. yes, set to regen so it continues where yopu left off. Use the Rec Check button if your time code goes back to zero after first take.

Set FCP for non drop timecode as well if you want to timecode to be of value for logging and capture.

Re: Outputting 2:3:3:2 to Tape

Thanks again!!

DVX always shoots in non drop frame timecode when in 24 mode (p or pa) regardless of what you have set on the camera.

I know, but there is a setting when the DVX is in VCR mode to allow for drop or non-drop. I mention this because I have never read a post where changing this setting is mentioned.

I wonder how many people have recorded with dropframe when intending to archive a 2:3:3:2 project to tape resulting in (unknown) ruined archives?!

Re: Outputting 2:3:3:2 to Tape

Just curious...

Is anyone else setting the DVX to non-drop frame when in VCR mode?

:-/
