Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

I am new to video editing, and have been using Studio 9 for the past couple of months. I am hearing great things about Vegas, and am thinking about purchasing. Can I expect to see a difference in the quality of video and audio output from identical clips burned to a dvd depending upon whether they come from Studio or Vegas? In other words, if I used the identical, unaltered clip directly from my DVX and burned it to a dvd, would there be a qualitative difference depending upon whether it came through Vegas or Studio?

Probably; the encoders are better -- but it also depends on the size of your screen.

Remember, though, you don't burn DVDs from Vegas; you do it with DVD Architect 2. The advantages over Studio are vast. Full control over menus. AC-3 encoding for 5.1 surround sound. Subtitling. Alternate sound tracks. End actions. To name but a few.

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

So encoding in MPEG-2 with Studio will differ than with Vegas. Enough difference to see? Also, I thought I had 5.1 surround with Studio but from your answer it sounds like I am not encoding with AC-3, maybe Studio just gives me control over the five speakers.

Why would my screen size matter?

Just bought "The DVX Book" with accompanying dvd. Along with this site I am learning a whole lot!! This site is fantastic for dvx owners.

Vegas' encoder blows away Pinnacle's Studio encoder by leaps and bounds. Even Vegas' cheaper Vegas Movie Studio is far and away better. Take footage of flames, smoke, or fog and encode them in both. Look at the difference in the Macroblocking. It's very visible.

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Thank you for your reply. This must be a good omen since just today I took delivery of your "Instant Vegas 5" and "Vegas 5 Editing Workshop" I am already about a third of the way through the former and it is tremendously helpful. Today I also purchased online Vegas 5 +DVD (from Ventura Educational Systems...I really am a teacher...hope this is a reputable software retailer...anybody out there have any experience with them?) and anxiously await their delivery. In the meantime I download a trial version of Vegas 5 and I love it. I'm not sure why, but the preview quality blows away the Studio's preview, but of course I am unable to burn a dvd to see the final result.

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Well . . . you can make Vegas's preview window any size you want . . . Studio's is just that tiny little thing . . .

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Yes, I realize that the size of the window can be changed with Vegas, but the quality of the video seems to be much better, even for similar sized preview window with the Studio window.

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Studio 9 and Vegas are apples and oranges. If you want to move to a much more stable NLE such as Vegas but don't need all the audio and video plugins etc that the full Sony Vegas package offers then try the Screenblast product that Sony Media Software has. It's a watered down version of Vegas more comparable to Studio 9 and burns DVD too I think. Then when your ready to upgrade to Sony Vegas I think you are elgable for a discount against the Vegas package. You can check all this out on the http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Thanks, I will definately check out the link. There is also a Sony product, I think it is called Movie 2 or something like that. My impression is that it is also a watered down version of Vegas. Any idea about differences between Screenblast and Movie?

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

I believe what was Screenblast has been renamed Vegas Movie Studio + DVD with which you can edit with limited audio tracks and limited plugins and then burn to a DVD with some version of DVD Architect (DVDA) i think. Even this product will go miles over Studio 9. I began with Studio 7 but discovered Vegas 3 and never looked back tp a Pinnacle product again, now using Vegas 5.0b

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

I downloaded the trial version of Vegas 5.0b and have been playing around for the past several days, but have not played with dvd Architect at all. It is a bit overwhelming compared with Studio 9. I placed an order yesterday for Vegas 5 +DVD and anxiously await its arrival. First effort will be to see if I can actually burn a dvd with the new toys. This was a mindless effort in Studio, and I am a bit confused about the ordering of rendering, compression of video to mpeg-2 and audio to ac-3 (I think I have to do the video and audio separately?) and at which stage I will be doing all this in Vegas and/or DVD Architect??? Once I get thru it once the pieces will fall in place much faster thereafter.....I hope.

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Go to the VASST Website, www.vasst.com and go to the training section and check out the Vegas 5 traing DVD's. I have them and they are excelent. I came friom Studio 7 to Vegas 3 lite then to 4 and then 5. Keep on experimenting and get the Vegas training DVD's. Vegas isn't really that complex, just takes some getting used to like any other professional NLE package. Also the Sony Vegas users forum can be helpful too.

The work flow for me is uaually to capture and edit the video first after that do the audio. Since I usually do an ac3 audio file the the Mpeg file is video only and a separate PCM audio. I discard the PCM and replace it with an ac3 stereo or 4.1 or 5.1 what ever the cliant wants. I don't have DVDA but use Adobe Encore 1.5 to author and burn my DVD's. So some one else will have to take your DVDA questions. Good luck.

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

Well, I can happily report that Vegas 5 and DVD Architect are both working well. The stability of this NLE compared with Studio V9 is much better. I also captured some 24P taken in the advanced mode (used the 2332 pulldown removal), edited and burned a quick dvd and all went well. I think I did it correctly, but see question below.

As I understand it, when I render and burn video shot in 24PA to dvd, it remains native 24P ON THE DVD (in MPEG-2), but is then converted to 60i by my dvd player when viewed on my NTSC TV. Am I correct about this?

Re: Output Quality to DVD for Vegas vs. Studio

I think I did it correctly. Now, when I play the dvd on my pc rather thru my TV, am I viewing in native 24p since the monitor is a progressive device?
