Output problem - please help

Hates to Rent
So I normally leave these steps to others, but decided to render my project and output to DVD myself to try it.

Project is shot in 720P , and has lots of stock footage interspersed with the stuff I shot.

THis is the deal - when it is rendered as an MPEG, output being an NTSC video stream (NOT WIDESCREEN) , the result when burned onto a DVD is that all the footage I shot has a black band top and bottom - all of the stock footage I used is perfect - fills the whole screen!!!! Actually all the stuff i shot is OK width wise, just not height wise.

I know I'm a noob and this is probably something simple.

This sounds about right. If you have a 16:9 stream and you output as 4:3 DVD, then you will get letterboxing. This is the right way for the app to do this. If you want the image to fill the screen you will have to either export as 16:9 DVD stream, or check the "do not letterbox" option on the "render as" window, in which case the picture will stretch to 4:3 and it will look unnatural. If this is not what you want, then try this:

Thanks Eugenia.

So I would get letterboxing only on the native 720 stuff? Does the footage come out of the HVX as 16x9 natively?

Thanks!

All HD is 16:9.

I'm surprised you didn't see this problem on your timeline before you exported.

As a matter of fact, I have my preview window set to display the correct aspect ratio, and it looked perfect - all of it.

And as far as the other video inserted, I toggled the checkbox to stretch it to fit the HD stuff (i.e. maintain aspect ratio).

Who knows. I really am a noob when it comes to output like this, and thank you and Eugenia for your help.
