Output looks Terrible

I have a dvx100b and when I capture the video, it looks aweful and it's about 6 gigs for fifteen minutes or so. A friend of mine took the clip and "sorrensen squeezed" it and it looks a lot better. The clip now says MPEG-4 AVC_1Mps. Is this the best quality or is there a better compression setting to use?

Question 2 - I'm going to be putting it in after effects, how sould I export it to be authored on encore? Compression or not and if so, what setting should I use?

Thank you in advance....frustrated.

It is hard to believe that your footage is actually improved by compressing it. How are you viewing the original footage? If you provide more detailed information about exactly what you are doing, I'm sure someone here will be able to help you.

that's what I thought. It's captured as a "video clip" and I've tried looking at it with windows media player and quicktime. Windows media player is really dark and looks aweful. The quicktime is better, but it's not very sharp, kind of muddy. The compressed file at mpeg-4 AVC_1Mbps is really sharp and the color, especially flesh tones, is good. The Raw captured clip is 4 gigs, while the mpeg-4 is only 140k in size.

Is the captured video supposed to look nice? If so, do you think it's a codec issue? I have a new computer with a good video card and new, fast dual monitors, so I can't see the system being at fault.

if it helps, the clip properties are

bit rate - 1536kbps
audio sample size - 16 bit
audio format - PCM
Frame rate - 29 fps

Now, here's something really wierd, the captured video looks really aweful, which is on the F drive. The strange thing is, when sorrenson squeeze is opened and has a file in it from the F drive, if I play any of the captured video clips from the F drive on windows media player, it plays perfect. What's going on?
