Hey everyone,

I have spent quite awhile searching around but I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.
Filming of my current film is going to start on the 27th and I am still a little confused about which microphone. Most of the shooting is outdoors with a little indoors and a few car scenes. I live in Arizona so it's going to be sometimes upwards of 100, most likely no wind. I want to use a boom mic for sure. I will be filming with a DVX100b. I can spend around 400, not including the boom pole if necessary.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Rent the gear, hire a sound guy/gal.

$400 might get you a mic that you could use to pound in roofing nails, but little else.

At the very least, you'll need the following items:

-Microphone
-Cable(s)
-Headphones
-Boompole
-Shockmount
-Wind protection
-A boom operator

Additionally, I would strongly reccomend a small ENG mixer with headphone return. Theoretically you don't need one, but life sucks without it.

you can get the at4073a by audio technica for mid-500's. but you still need wind protection and shock mounting (thats about 220$ for a rycote system), so thats $770 or so. Maybe a bit much, only decent mic below the 4073a is the at897 (also audio technica) but personally i would buy one, so the rental suggestion is indeed a good one.
