Outdoor Shoot

I'll be shooting an indie this spring. While 95% of it will be outdoors, I ask for suggestions on lighting. Most shots will be 8 - 10 feet away. Will I need to rent lights? Will I be fine without? I'd sure appreciate some ideas. I'll be shooting with a XL2. Also if anyone can recommend a crt monitor for the shoot I'd appreciate it. This is a great resource for beginners and in advance I'm very thankful.

Re: Outdoor Shoot

Depending on if its going to be sunny on the day of the shoot you may need scrims to cut down the sun light. You may also have to use flags to block unwanted light and you may also need some HMI's or other similiar lights. It all depends on what the scene calls for. There are times when you can get away with no lights but I wouldn't shoot the whole movie with no lights.

Re: Outdoor Shoot

Looks like after reading the comparison it might be a dvx100a to rent, but definitely with an anamorphic adapter. Thanks shooter, what about an additional monitor any you recommend.

Re: Outdoor Shoot

Yea, you will deffinetly want something to diffuse the natural sunlight. Bring lots of foam core, and reflectors and depending on how much light there is, you might be able to get away with just that....

Re: Outdoor Shoot

In the more expensive world we often use what is called a butterfly to diffuse direct light placing it above out talent. It's a metal frame with a silk material held by two large stands. I've used them as big as 50x50 feet. But you can make yourself an inexpensive one out of white shower curtain and a wood frame. Softens sunlight very nicely.

Re: Outdoor Shoot

On a windy day, you'll want a few sandbags to keep the butterfly from turning into a sail and butterflying away. :p Either that, or a few friends to hold onto the damn thing.

Re: Outdoor Shoot

I have seen the Network news crews using those. How close or far away are you supposed to place those to the talent? I guess another thing is that those are probably just good for talent that is standing still right or could you have some crew people carrying one around if the person needed to walk?

Speaking of walking....I have seen some crews with Floro's I guess that had handles on them and can light people as they walked down the street. Is that something that I would have to just go buy some handles or do they make lights like that for mobile purposes? The lighting person would be positioned right next to the cinemotographer.
