Out There!

In more ways than one! I am old school film/video jumping in the new waters of HD and digital video so alot of the tech lingo is very foreign to me but here goes.

I'll be going to the (top of the) Sierra Madres in Mexico for 3 or 4 days, then a week for a wildlife documentary. So I'll be out there with NO electricity available for the first trip and then possibly 220 after that. I plan to use the DVX200 primarily because of the widescreen availability and beautiful lens. First: is the true widescreen an option with standard def? as tape may be the way I have to go. Second: I would love to shoot HD but my concern is cost with the P2's. Does anyone have any recomendations? The P2 store, FireStore? I have a Mac PBG4, but again the issue of limited power and crashes are making me nervous. I'd like to get the most bang for my buck with as few scarey moments as possible. Thanks!

yea get one or 2 P2 cards the 4gig ones and then get an external, shot and dump and shoot and dump. OR shoot adn dump to your laptop and then transfer to the External.

MsKly, don't feel bad. I'm an old schooler also! For the last 3 years I've been like a 20 year old starting over. But reading up on HD for 2 or more hours a day has made me feel like an old 21 year old! :)
It has sure helped me to know when and how to jump in though. It helped me understand WHY the HVX was THE option for my company, at least for now.

You didn't mention how much you have to spend. (First priority) and how much and ove rhow long will you have to re-coup the investment.
My call would be to get 2-4 8gig cards, (I have 2). Load up on as many batteries as you can take with you. You might want to get a couple large capacity batterys/belts.
Then at night with a radio shack 12 volt power converter you can get a couple HVX batteries charged.
A couple firestores would be good for storage, but we currently just use our laptop for dumping footage.

Keep us updated. Power on these kind of shoots is critical.

Thanks, guys!

Thanks, guys!

SurJones, Ted, Thank you for the advise.
It seems pretty cut and dry. I just need to make sure I have enough power. Is there any particular external drive you would recommend for the situation? I'll need at least 400gb storage.
Right now the budget is low. I'm begining to think forget the firestore/P2 blahblah to small. fine for small jobs NOT this.
I'm telling you, the arty part I got down like nobodys business but this tech stuff is making my head spin already! Thank goodness I'll have crew with current technical experience. I just want to shoot beautiful imagry and get a gorgeous product out there. Does anyone do that anymore?
I have another question concerning those jagged edges particularly when shooting large birds in flight (Interlacing?), but maybe I should post that in the Tech area.
Thanks again !
keep you posted Ted on the results.
