Out of the blue e-mail

So, I open up my inbox to find this particulary trollish email. The more time that I spend on this earth the more I realize that people in general are just....

"Hi Jeremy,

I was looking on the internet for wedding cinematographers, and I found your website. You say you are "cinematographers", but you are not unless you use 16mm or high 8 film. You only showcase digital cameras, so therefore you should not technically call yourself a cinematographer.

Maybe you should reconsider the terms you use for your work, because it is misleading and incorrect.

Saundra"

I started a length response then felt it more appropriate to send back the following.

"I have no response to that."

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

I'd let her know that Hi8 was never a film format - she must be thinking of Super-8. If she's going to dump on you, she might as well get her terminology right.

Also let her know that you and Lucas and Rodriguez have all decided to go to Digital Cinematography, and that you're sorry for any misunderstanding.

;)

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

Who would want their wedding shot on film anyway? Every 10 minutes you'd have to stop the whole thing to switch mags...?

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

you should tell her that she needs to put robert rodriguez, james cameron, george lucas, and a growing number of other peeps on her list too. because you really want to make sure that this profound idiocracy is realised to its full potential.
then tell her to start e-mailing all the "photographers" that shoot on digital SLRs to make sure they know that they really arent "photographers". make sure to end with " i know that together, we can make a difference! "

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

My inital response include Lucas, Rodriguez, Cameron as well as that liitle movie titled November that won Best Cinematography at Sundance.

The problem lies in belief. I had a logic porfessor back in college who would actually stop class if somebody said they believed. He would simply say belief is not logical and inherinetly does not allow for logical debate, he would pack his stuff say goodbye and that he would see us next tuesday.

I say if belief were a wet noodle I would have hit "Saundra" over the head with it until she saw that light can be captured in many ways and the method of capture does not necesarily play a significant role in the value of the said captured light.

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

You should've opened a can... ignoring the idiots in the world only lets them propogate and grow.

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

I used to work for a guy (gold-nuggetty bracelet-wearing Texas corporate ass-kissing kind of fellow) who loved to comment on how customers are always right, "...perception is reality".

This "kernel of wisdom" was usually dropped on my team after we'd already been broadsided with a request for a comp. or something that was going to cost us money.

Anytime he said that to me, I wanted to kick him in his face with my Vibram-soled Rockports and say, "Don't worry, it's just your perception that I kicked you in your face - the pain you're feeling and the blood all over your cheap suit is not reality".

I'm a non-violent fellow and never lived-out this rather frightening fantasy.

Anyway, the customer is not always right, and sometimes - even if you don't get the business because of it - it feels really good to tell them so.

;)

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

"Dear Saundra,

Thank you for your comments, but I think you're mistaken because a cinematographer is a movie photographer--regardless of the format, film or digital. I do wonder if you're a virgin, though. If not, then technically you shouldn't plan on wearing a white wedding dress. It would be misleading and incorrect. Don't you think?" ;D

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

Who ever that was, they are either..
A> Pist off they should of been a cinematographer instead of a sales person at your local video store
B> same as A
C> Same as b

aw, you get the picture

I'll toast to that one when we get together for a drink - hopefully soon! ;D

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

I got a rather odd email about a year ago from a woman asking if she could buy movies about horses from me.

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

I got asked once if I ever bounced. To which I replied:

"No, I am cancelled, but there are plenty of brothers in my father's Czech book."

You can laugh now if you find it funny. I think I've heard (and received by e-mail) every joke in existence on Czeching things out, that I shouldn't make Czechmarks on the floor with my boots, etc... And, yes, at least once a year, I travel to my mother land to Czech out the Czech chicks.

:P

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

LOL, David!

My fiancee is slovak... Check them; all girls from these countries are awesome beautiful mother nature creatures! She even don´t let me look around, just in case. But i don´t need it...

There are mirrors everywhere!!  ;D

Anyway Jeremy, if she was looking in internet for a wedding cinematographer what she was especting? To find Pretty Woman crew to film her wedding? what she thinks of how a wedding is recorded these days? 35mm and steadycam, jib, dolly and 2.5 HMIs? Unless she is Adriana Eskleranikova and wants to spent the money in divorcing Karembeu and marrying me, of course. Then i would get War of the world´s team (spielberg included) to film it.

The white dress point is totally perfect... Tell her! ;D 8)

Re: Out of the blue e-mail

Jeremy, Sorry to hear about the email - sounds like someone has some issues! I whole heartedly agree - the customer is not always right.

I must say that I love the responses posted here, very fitting for such an email. ;D
