Out of sync?

I use Sony Vegas Pro 13.

When I record using a webcam everything looks fine and totally in sync on the raw file.

When I drop the file into Vegas, the audio is off by about half a second.

To remedy it, I have just been manually adjusting the audio file until it appears to be in sync with the video...but it's not an exact science.

Is this pretty much the only way to deal with this, or is there some kind of trick I'm unaware of?

I'd check first to see if the audio is in sync before you import it by viewing it in a media player because it might be a problem with the screen capture program or computer system setting. I'm assuming you're using a screen capture program.

If sync drifts gradually away then expect Vegas to be the locked solid one, and the frame rate of the captured video to be the one causing problems. I collected in over 40 video clips, for one of those lockdown music videos and the images were mostly iPhones, then Samsungs, then a few go pros and then some Chinese cheap GoPro type cameras. The problem for this project was that most of these produced files that were 30fps. This I expected and converted to 25fps easily. A few of the iPhones seemed to be at really bizarre frame rates - one said it was something like 28.1256fps - this is surely impossible, and worst were the Chinese cheap action cameras that said they were 30fps, but they seemed to speed up and down, as if the actually frame rate was really loose around the 30 set in the menu.

The good ones were absolutely rock solid on the time line, but so many went on too long or finished early, and I never got to the bottom of what. everyone was singing and playing to a track - so they should all have been exactly the same, but they weren't. I have an app on my iPhone called mavis that allows control of the camera and if I use this, sync is always guaranteed and it lets me shoot in 25fps when this is important.
