Out-of-ammo reaction

I just noticed that in movies when a gun runs out of ammo the actor almost always turn to look at it with a surprised/puzzled expression before reloading/throwing it away. Does this happen in real life or is it just an artificial visual clue for the audience to know that the gun is out of ammo? Sorry for the silly question.

This is not a real reaction for someone who knows weapons.

I also hate it when say the lead character is shooting an automatic weapon like a machine gun with one hand, or a pair in each hand. Anyone who has title 2 weapons, or has fired them knows how heavy they really are and how they really react while being fired.

I've always thought throwing the empty gun at the other person, as often happens in movies and TV shows, is really stupid. No one would do that.

It's pretty much the same as when someone needs a blood sample or somesuch thing, people on TV and in movies always pull out a knife and carve a gully into the palms of their hands, instead of, I don't know, pricking a fingertip or something. Who would DO that? I mean, REALLY?

I think the general lesson is to just assume EVERYTHING you see in TV movies that has any counterpart in real life is inaccurate for the sake of drama/production design/visuals/etc., and then when you find something IS actually true to life, you can be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah. We used to laugh about that as kids. Shooting aimlessly, then running out, surprised, throwing down the gun etc .... :)
