Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

First off......is there a website where I can see different cams and sample clips?

I need a recommendation on a beginner cam, and I have no idea where to start looking, or whats reputable, or whats a great deal for the price, or whats just trash.
I know a lot about digital camera's (still)......but as some may know the transition to video is quite different.

I have shot on Hi8 and MiniDV.
I prefer MiniDV.

Pricewise.....Lets say Budget of $1,000 ?
This is something to hold me over for maybe a first year in college? (I will be a senior in HS)
What is the most comparable thing to the DVX100a? Having that 24p quality.

Sorry if some of this sounds really "noobish" but we all started somewhere.

I would appreciate any help you guys could give me.
Thank you.

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

I guess the real question is what do you want to do? Getting 24P under a hundred bucks will be difficult. Except for maybe a 8mm film camera that you can overcrank to 24p ;)

Seriously though. If you looking to make movies, etc... and have like zero cash, go with a canon L2. Excellent Hi8 camera.

I sold one of the youth I work with my sony TRV30 minidv. It was the highest single CCD cam they had a couple years ago. Sold if for 500 bucks to him. It started having internal problems so I bought it back from him.
Then I directed him to the L2. He found one on Ebay for under 400 dollars.
And he loves it. Excellent picture. Timecode. and innerchangable lenses.
Remember, its not the equipment but what you do with it.

For me, the next step down from the DVX is the PD150, and one step down from that is the GL2.

The PD150 is a rock solid camera, pro features, and you can drop it from 5' on its lens and it will keep working.

The GL2 is a great little camera that is hindered from a consumer interface. It has a great image and a tiny little size, but the audio leaves a lot to be desired.

You can find them both used, but I'd be suspicious of either if it were being sold close to 1k. Might harbor some gremlins.

As stated by jdk2man above, you didn't mention what you intend to do with this camera, so it's hard to give advice about what to look for.

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

well right now......its more about looking at something to get STARTED with.....and looking at these cams.....
I think it may be just as well that I get the DVX instead of one of these.
Its probably hard to recommend, but like I said....under 1K.....
basically a prosumer camera.

I'm not a fan of used stuff, so new is what I will be looking for.

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

DVX is no "beginnercam" IMO.

it is like asking if a Porsche 911 is a beginnercar. it can be, but it could turn out as hard work to get it to its limits....

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

let me rephrase my beginner cam statement......

BUDGET camera on a professional level?
I found the AG-DVC7 from Panasonic at around 1k.

I really just want to see a place that has sample clips from cams, because when buying a digicam....you don't just buy it blindly without seeing image quality.

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

you might be able to get a vx2000 for that...used of course.

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

thats a good point.......my friend has one.
Should've thought of that

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

if you can get a used vx2000 for 1k than you should, you'll be happy with that quality. it shoot's in progressive, with the proper lighting and composition can pull a very nice image

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

friend of mine got it new for $800
probably greymarketed.....

what do you mean when you say shoots in progressive?

I am probably gonna wait it out.....chances are the college I attend will have these cameras already

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

Why not check out the PV-GS400 [ Panasonic ] ???? I'm told you can find it for $1250 street price................Badass lil camera , new technology,..........You can shoot 30P..............Seriously consider this gem if spending a grand , Should beat the pants off of any similarly priced camera.

Re: Other than the DVX (camera recommendations)

I hear the street price is more around $1500 for the gs400..
