Other Onboard lights

ive been considering several lights including the vidled and varizoom led lights but im wondering about other options that are maybe cheaper so ive been browsing B&H.

does anyone have any other suggestions ive seen kits like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...491&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

for example and i'm wondering how something like that might compare to the varizoom or vidled. I guess the biggest plus about the led lights is they wont burn out for a very very long time?

let me know what your opinions are.

That Bescor light is pretty good (for the price). Since it's 50W you'll need quite a big and heavy battery though. That's probably the biggest difference between the VIDLED and Varizoom: the total weight of the system. With the LED lights you won't need a huge battery pack, and like you mentioned, you won't experience bulb blow-outs.

But the 645 is dimmable too, so that's good, and I've used it in the past. Quite some bang for your buck. Comes down to what you prefer, and how much you can afford.

as the rep or at least supporter of VIDLED (not sure how you're associated with them) how much light does the VIDLED really output? I have seen it and some sample footage and but i'm unsure as to how bright it really is. Plus the big concern i have is to how the cheaper model ($275?) is powered, the more expensive one comes with a battery pack and such etc... can you give more details? thats the only area where i'm a little unsure about.

thanks.

We make 'em.

The coolLED is the brightest one, and uses only 6W. Its output is in the vicinity of a 20W to 40W incandescent light; but that all depends on how, who, and where that is measured/compared.

The STANDARD versions need to be powered from an external source. Any DC battery pack will do as long as it's between 7.2V and 30V, and can cope with 6W.
The DELUXE version INCLUDES a small BATTERYPACK within the VIDLED's housing. So there's no need to connect any battery pack to it. Just turn it on and illuminate!
The DELUXE version's battery will last about 1 hour and 30 minutes on FULL POWER (it is dimmable), after which time it needs to be connected to the supplied CHARGER (the DELUXE version can't be connected to an external battery; it needs to be connected to the charger to have its internal battery pack recharged.)
An LCD, by the way, indicates the battery remaining power, so you'll always know how charged the internal battery pack is.

The DELUXE version is VERY convenient, as it does NOT require an external battery pack. It's probably the best and lowest cost ALL-INCLUSIVE LED package out there. But if it's "super long run times" you're after, then the STANDARD version might be a better choice. When an external battery pack is drained, simply switch battery packs, and keep shooting...

Hope this helps

thats awesome, thanks for the time you put into this answer. Clears up a lot of questions i had. One last thing, the DVX battery adapter is listed as being available on November 2nd. Can i place my order now and have it shipped whenever you recieve them?

HVX/DVX adapter: yes, that's fine. They're still not quite available, but we'd simply send it to you separately once available.

I used my Vidled coolLED light last week on a News Live shot. I used it for an early morning live shot when it was still dark outside. The light lit up the talent's clothes but barely was lighting up the face. I had to use a stand light and gel it to match the LED light and then used the LED as a fill and everything looked good after I made that adjustment...I had photogs from the other stations coming over and "sweating" my light!!! Ha ha!!!

I really don't like the kind like the one in your link. They usually use lamp/reflector combos (the reflector comes with the lamp, just like with household halogen lamps) and these reflectors are usually bad.

We recently bought a Sachtler Reporter 75h and I really like it. We're using it with 50W, but you can use anything from 20W to 75W (12V). The glass ctb (1/2 ctb) that comes with it is really good (no false coloring detectable like with other glass ctb filters).

PAGlight is also a good one, nothing to complain about (20W-100W, 12V Halogen).

A friend of mine bought a dimmable Ianiro Aladino recently and says it's perfect as a fill with 35W, 12V.

All of the above need to be powered with battery-belts, 12V or 13.2V, which are pretty expensive.

We also have a Ianiro divino at work (the very small light especially for cams like the DVX). I'd say don't buy it, it's more like a nice-looking, expensive toy. The reflector is too small and the light too focussed. Maybe if you only need a little fill or some eye-light it might be ok. If you really need to brighten things up, forget about the divino.

btw. privately I own a Bauer-Bosch light from ebay that I bought for 11 Euro. Bought some cable and two model-race-car battery packs (7.2V, 3300mAh) and a charger. All this together cost less than 80 Euro and I have 35W light for one hour in a lamp with a pretty decent pa reflector. Doesn't always have to be expensive! :)

I have a long lasting battery for my dvx100b (8 hours?)

any idea how long that would power the Vidled?

also, I've read about power "taps" that (I think) hook right onto the battery that's powering the camera so you don't need two batteries at the same time.

thanks

The 5600mAh battery will last about 6 hours with a coolLED or about 9 hours with a warmLED or dayLED.
