Hey everyone.

I am obviously very new (first post) but am definitely planning on attempting to become an active member here (key word: attempting, since there are over 69,000 members-- holy crap).

I was wondering, though, if anyone knows of another film forum that focus more on the philosophy / aesthetics of film rather than putting more focus on the technical aspect of filmmaking (like this one). Any help would be great. Thanks!

You may find what you're looking for within the film discussion sub-forum... just down from the cafe'... otherwise I'd be surprised if you don't find some conversation more in that area within a writing forum (writing forum here, or elsewhere, but heavy on scripts)... if you want to know the motivation of a film or discuss elements of a story.

When I hear "aesthetics" I think DP (or technical... i.e. "the look" of the film)... you may want to elaborate a bit more on the kind of discussion you're looking for... I may be ignorant on this issue... but I see philosophy and aesthetics as two different things, unless you want to know WHY a film has a particular look... and again, I think that's a DP and story (script) issue.

Yeah, moments within posting that I was under the impression that it was possible for "aesthetics" to be interpreted as what we see / the composition of a film, things along those lines. What I was going for, though, wasn't so much the "how" (ie. how to get a particular tone, which lens produces which aesthetic, etc.) but rather, the "why", why did the director decide to convey this image in the way he/she did, why is this scene black & white whereas the rest of the film is not, things like that.

But I appreciate the help and I'll be sure to check out that section. Thanks very much!

Though if any other forums that seem to match up with what I'm talking about jump to mind for any of you, please feel free to share. :)

Hi Tyler. Welcome to the Forum. Your sig says Portland, so double welcome to a local. There are several active NW members, so be sure to post any activities you may be up to.

Best wishes.
