OT: how to mark gear semi-permanently

Another of those hard to figure out where to post threads...

Anyway, how do you guys mark your gear semi-permanently? What kind of label maker (if any) do you guys use?

Yeah, basically some sort of metallic sticker for stands and other metal items such as ballasts and camera accessories. You should also pick a color and label all of your gear with that for lighting equipment. If you have light stands, spray paint all of the collars and heads your color and put your sticker on it.

What you might also consider doing for stingers or any other cables, is they have heat shrink tubing you can buy. Maybe considering buying a bunch of lengths of that in your particular color and use that to label your stingers. I've seen people also use the clear heat shrink tubing to affix their stickers to the stingers, but they always come out sort of cloudy, so I don't know if I'd recommend that...

For camera cases, you can use a label maker, but I don't really like how uncustomizable the type is. Instead I just print out a little something on my home printer and then use packing tape to attach it to the case. Looks very clean and you can print out a logo along with whats in the case.

My University uses a Brother PT 2700 with extra strength tape to label their gear. For inventory control they use metal labels similar to the ones mentioned. The Brother labels are to keep the equipment in the right cases, eg camera HD3 has a baseplate, mic, XLR cable, lens, and body that all have a label that says HD3.

I actually created a bumper sticker with different sizes of my logo that I can cut up. You can ordered them online from many places, like Zazzle. At 11"x3" for $4 you can get a lot of small stickers or several larger ones out of a single bumper sticker. Because they are vinyl they aren't good for fixtures that get hot (like lights) but for everything else they look fantastic. Add your website or phone number and slap it on the side of you camera and you've got an instant advertisement when you're shooting an event.

If you have a bigger item such as a RED package, you might also want to look into some laser cutting. A friend of mine designed wooden nameplates and laser cut them himself with his company name and contact info and man...they look very very sweet and are very unique.
