OT Even for This Place

So...I'm reading Robinson Crusoe, just barely started it, and am confused.

It starts out with Crusoe sailing from Hull to London...but after 6 days of sailing, they're somehow in the Yarmouth Roads (by the Isle of Wight), which is well past London.

Is there any particular reason you can think of why it was taking longer to sail to London than it would have taken to walk?

Or did they sail the long way 'round, up around Scotland? (What the heck for?)

Things can definitely go wrong at sea... I heard that it was only supposed to be a three hour tour.

A tour...lasting not more than, and certainly not less than, 180 minutes (that's 3 hours for those with less than stellar math skills)

To respond to GenJerDan, I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing its because he didn’t take a direct flight, er ship. Meaning, I would imagine that the ship was taking a circuitous route around England, picking up and dropping off passengers and cargo all along the way.

Kind of like how taking the bus from central California to Southern California takes like 20+ hours, when it only takes 6 to drive in a car, because of the many stops the bus makes to let passengers on and off at various cities along the way.

I prefer sense...

On the other hand, Dafoe has redeemed himself by using a word I had never seen before which, as a bonus, has shown me the (presumptive*) origin of the word "spats".

"Spatterdashes"

*I haven't looked it up for an offical confirmation...but it seems downright obvious.

Maybe I missed the connection, but what does that have to do with your original question?

Doesn't matter Terry! If the thread title is "OT Even for this place" then the posts can certainly be "OT Even for this thread!"

Now stop banging the cowbell and help pick a new rabbit trail.

"OT"?... as in overtime?

Oh, I get it...

Spatterdashes begat spats
Spats begat chaps
Chaps begat High Chapparal
