OSX Appearance Customizability

I read recently (never had a reason to think about it before) that OSX doesn't allow a great deal of customization of the OS appearance (which is a break from past Mac OSes), at least not without third-party software. Is that true?

Not wanting to start any debates/wars here; just looking for the answer.

It's not like WinXP where you can change the color/text of menu bars and stuff...if that's what you're asking about.

Surprises me, too, since with real Unix you can do just about anything you want to the appearance. Oh well.

It basically gives you two system "themes". A traditional OSX look with the red, green, and yellow buttons on windows, and an all silver version (which is much nicer imho). I believe its all part of their attempt to streamline and solidify the user experience, and keep it beautiful at the same time.
