I honestly think this year is a complete tossup for Best Picture. There is no clear front runner at all. The only things I'd put money on are Mickey Rourke for best actor, Peter Morgan for best adapted screenplay, and Wall-E for best Animated film. I'd also put decent odds on Heath Ledger as Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight.

Bruce Springsteen for Best Song.

And I agree on Wall-E and Mickey Rourke. Everything else, I have no idea.

The academy isn't big on superhero movies but Heath Ledger will get it for supporting actor.

Best Picture:
Best Director:Darren Aranofsky
Best Actor:Mickey Rourke
Best Actress: Cate Blanchette
Best Supporting Actor:Heath ledger
Best Supporting Actress: Samantha Tildon
Best Cinematography: dont know....

Sorry, what's best supporting actor?

I know Benjamin Button will win some awards.. (Best picture, Best Director, and the acting)

But I'm not to familiar with a supporting actor award?

Robbie

Sorry, what's best supporting actor?

Best actor in a supporting role. It's somewhat nebulous and subjective, but basically means any role that is not a lead. Heath as The Joker is on the borderline of this definition, but probably qualifies based on screen time. Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler is definitely NOT a supporting role, as the film is called The Wrestler, and he is the wrestler and in almost every scene.

Note: these are NOT my predictions (those are between me and my bookie).

Best Director - Brian Singer (Valkyrie)

You F*&*ING kidding me?

Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire. If not him then Howard for Frost/Nixon or Fincher for Benjamin Button. Eastwood for Gran Torino. All WAY more deserving than Singer for that crap pile that we know as Valkyrie.

The only thing that is certain is that Wall-E will win best animated film.

I am hoping films like Slumdog Millionaire, Let the Right One In, Benjamin Button and The Wrestler get recognized.

Definitely Let the Right One In for Best Foreign Language Film, assuming that it qualified for Sweden's entry.

I am thinking Flight of the Red Balloon is best foreign film. It was the best film I have seen this year.

Somebody in another thread said that Hsiao-hsien Hou is the man. I wholeheartedly agree. This guy blows my socks off.

If you like Hsiao-Hsien Hou, you might appreciate this recent article: http://www.reverseshot.com/node

I saw Flight of the Red Balloon. Fortunately, I was in a mood to meditate for two hours. I thought it was artful and beautiful, but...gosh...I barely remember what happens. Maybe because nothing happens? It's a bit of an exclusive club, the "I Love The Red Balloon Club." I see independent films like Ballast that are just as good, but not so universally lauded.

As for foreign films, doesn't 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days qualify this year? It was really incredible. It starts sort of like Red Balloon (in that it's a bit tedious) and then becomes absolutely gripping in its quiet assault on our emotions. Red Balloon is flat in comparison. Anyhow, I see 4 Months is now on DVD. Get through the first 15 minutes and I think you'll be richly rewarded with a very fine, original film.
