Oscar Nominations

That was actually the only reason I still watch the Academy Awards...

I agree, Avatar should get it's weight in gold when it comes to technical awards but as far as an overall film being praised for directing, screenplay, acting...

Anyways, TSN or King's Speech, it's anybody's call I guess.

I'm pulling for Black Swan and Inception, but I'm betting that The Fighter and The Social Network will scoop up most of the awards. True Grit will probably have a good chance of getting some Academy love as well. Natalie Portman should win best actress for Black Swan, and I think she has a good chance of taking home the award. Inception will most likely get completely shutout, except maybe for visual effects. Maybe. I doubt it though.

I have to agree with those surprised that Tron didn't get a visual effects nomination. Also, for True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld to be lumped into the best supporting actress category instead of best actress seems wrong. She was the only important female character, and the character that was the driving force behind the plot of True Grit. Rooster Cogburn was more of a supporting character, even though he had just about as much screen time and Jeff Bridges played the role with amazing skill and put a very distinct creative stamp on his portrayal.

Oh well. The Academy Awards are always kinda goofy these days.

I am very (but not really) surprised that Nolan got snubbed on the best director nod (AGAIN). The academy must REALLY not like him.

I was genuinely surprised to see him out of the Best Director lineup. I have not seen any of the nominees except for Black Swan, which I thought was one of Aronofsky's best, but I think Nolan was due nonetheless. To each his own.

He most definitely deserved Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay nods, though.

And yes, it is his first Best Picture nomination.

I can now officially say that I've worked on an Oscar nominated movie. If Alice wins for VFX, I will have worked on an Oscar winning movie.

Sweet!

Congrats and good luck on the night.

imo Unstoppable will get best sound editing. I saw it twice recently at the Mosman theatre here in Sydney, the last upgrade gave it the best sound systems in Sydney. There's only 2 theatres and they both sound fantastic.

But on a terribly sad note this beautiful theatre closes forever today, after 100 years in the biz. The reason is low attendances .. and the land is worth over 12mil.

A vaudville theatre started up there in 1911.

For local folk, the last session is 9pm tonight, Morning glory .. and Unstoppable, an incongrous title.

I went there as a young kid in the 60s :(

When John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn in the original 1969 True Grit, he won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. It doesn't surprise me that Bridges is nominated for lead and Steinfeld supporting.

I was kind of disappointed that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World didn't get nominated for Editing. I know the film isn't exactly what the Academy is looking for, but dramas aren't the only movies with great editing, and personally I thought SPvW smoked the competition this year.

That's well in keeping with the Academy's tradition. If the actor is a child or teenager, it is exceedingly rare that they are nominated in a lead category, regardless of the importance of the role, especially if it's the actor's first major screen appearance. Remember Timothy Hutton in Ordinary People? He played the lead role in the movie, but was only nominated (and won) for Supporting Actor. The reasoning seems to be that the child or newcomer has a better chance of winning if they're not competing against established, legendary actors in the leading category.

+1. I was just telling my friend yesterday that Scott Pigrim had the best editing in any movie I've seen this year. Although, you're right it's not really an "academy award film"

Then again, I don't exactly understand exactly what they look for in the category of "best film editing" either. Continuity? Pacing? Emotional impact? Style? Invisibility?

Side note: I was just as surprised when I started seeing Hailee's name pop up in all the supporting actress categories, but I'm kind of happy about that. IMO, she wouldn't stand a chance against Natalie's performance in Black Swan, but as supporting, I think she stands a chance of walking home with the gold. But I totally saw her as the lead in the film.

Good news for The Fighter: boxing movies tend to do well in the editing category. Body and Soul, Champion, Raging Bull, and Rocky all won Best Editing.

My predictions... Firth for lead, Bale for supporting, Portman for lead, Leo for supporting, King's Speech for picture... Cinematography to Inception... even though all the top films deserve it (except for fighter and social which were "standard" as far as cinematography)... score to inception... screenplay to social... director to fighter or speech (can't decide... maybe fighter).
