Oscar for Cinematography

This year the nominees for best cinematography is

The Aviator
House of Flying Daggers
The Passion of the Christ
The Phantom of the Opera
A Very Long Engagement

After viewing all these films it is very difficult to pick just one. If you've seen The Phantom it is well lit, well composed. House of Flying Daggers look like a painting in almost every shot. The Passion of the Christ was very good as well as The Aviator. If I was forced to make a decision I would have to go with Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "A Very Long Engagement" (DP: Bruno Delbonnel). That is my pick. Which film would you pick for best cinematography?

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

I've only seeen The Aviator and House of Flying Daggers and personally, I would go with The Aviator!

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

I have to go with Passions of the Christ. Just perfect!!! especially the scene at the scourging.

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

definitely very long engagement. Beautiful! Very disappointed with aviator, though not the photography. when will scorsese make something that doesn't cost a bajillion dollars again?

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

Everyone seems to think this will be Scorcese's year. May be but the Academy snubbed him many times (i.e., Gangs of NY, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc.). Well Aviator got the most nominations. Lets see if he pulls it off.

i still have to see aviator, house of flying dragons and phantom. but Very Long Eng. was amazing. i'll see the others before i make my decision

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

They have to give Mel Gibson something. The Oscar goes to Passion of the Christ.

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

Scorcese thinks that spending a crap load of money on a film will get him an Oscar.

Passion of the Christ was amazing visually. I'd go with it.

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

The trouble with all this talk about the best Cinematography...with, will this director or that director win, is that the Cinematographer or Director of Photography did the work, not the director.

Let's talk Cinematographer, not Director.

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

House of flying daggers. Simple but yet gold. I beent o the location where it was shot, and ill tell you they changed that bamboo to GREEN! ;-p. the aviator look like alot of cgi like the flying scene remind me of Sky captain. lol im disappointed with that. the other also so well but im a asian film lover so i got to go for daggers.

Re: Oscar for Cinematography

The Aviator: Robert Richardson (Still cant get over his great stuff in Kill Bill 2)
House of Flying Daggers: Xiaoding Zhao
The Passion of the Christ: Caleb Deschanel
The Phantom of the Opera: John Mathieson (Amazing job on Gladiator)
A Very Long Engagement: Bruno Delbonnel

I like Caleb for the Oscar. :)

But I wish Million Dollar Baby were up cus Tom Stern is awesome.
