OS Jokes

MS-DOS Airline
Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it crashes again, then they push again jump on again, and so on.

MacOS Classic Airline
All the stewards, stewardesses, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look the same, act the same, and talk the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are told you don't need to know, don't want to know, and would you please return to your seat and marvel at the image quality of the in-flight movie.

OS/2 Airline
To board the plane, you have your ticket stamped ten different times by standing in ten different lines. Then you fill out a form showing where you want to sit and whether the plane should look and feel like an ocean liner, a passenger train or a bus. If you succeed in getting on the plane and the plane succeeds in taking off the ground, you have a wonderful trip...except for the time when the rudder and flaps get frozen in position, in which case you will just have time to say your prayers and get in crash position.

Windows 95 Airline
The airport terminal is nice and colorful, with friendly stewards and stewardesses, and easy access to the plane. After the plane arrives, 6 months late, you have a completely uneventful takeoff... then, once in the air the plane blows up without any warning whatsoever.

Windows NT Airline
All the passengers carry their seats out onto the tarmac, placing the chairs in the outline of a plane. They all sit down, flap their arms and make jet swooshing sounds as if they are really flying.  Suddenly, someone runs by and throws blue paint on them, then explains that they can’t wear pants and shirts at the same time when flying.

Windows ME Airline
As a joke, someone repaints the Windows 95 airlines planes a different color, and then tries to sell it as a new product.  Passengers find out the hard way it is not.

Windows XP Airline
The airplane is very pretty, and each passenger gets to choose their own colour and pattern for the paintwork, and their own favourite engine noise. Unfortunately the plane is so heavy and so slow that it is unable to get airborne, and crashes at the end of the runway. When parked in the hanger, unresolved security bugs in the planes doors AND windows AND luggage-bay AND engines AND wings AND body panels allow thieves to break in and steal all the seats.

Unix Airline
Each passenger brings a piece of the airplane and a box of tools to the airport. They gather on the tarmac, arguing constantly about what kind of plane they want to build and how to put it together. Eventually, they build several different aircraft, but give them all the same name. Some passengers actually reach their destinations. All passengers believe they got there.

MacOS X Airline: The planes take off and arrives on time almost without fail, the flight is the best you've ever been in and you don't have to do anything beyond finding your seat, but your old luggage can't go with you and your frequent flyer miles expire every 2 years. It doesn't go to all of the airports served by the bigger airlines, but you arrive at a private terminal at most major destinations with a smug look on your face. Your other-airline using friends can't quite get why you don't use the cheaper, more crowded airlines.

BEOS Airline
There is no airplane. The passengers gather and shout for an airplane, then wait and wait and wait and wait. A bunch of people come, each carrying one piece of the plane with them. These people all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing constantly about what kind of plane they're building. The plane finally takes off, leaving the passengers on the ground waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting. After the plane lands, the pilot telephones the passengers at the departing airport to inform them that they have arrived.

Linux Airline
Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself for free. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

Re: OS Jokes

LOL, that's perfect! I'm a software developer and we have all different OS fans in our office which makes for very passionate (and funny) debates (when we're all onsite). I was going to prop my door open with one of my buddies MACs one day as a joke and tell him how I was so wrong all along at it was so helpful and useful!

Disclaimer/Note: I don't want to start a MAC/PC/OS fight ;) please...I love them all! ;D

MacOS and Microsoft are driving in different directions. The MacOS is driving for content creation as its core niche, while Microsoft is driving for content control. For example, Longhorn will feature hardware based copy protection that will scan all media files loaded onto a hard drive and see if you have the right to use them. It will also offer "microcharging" for application use, where you get charged a small amount, pennies really, each time you launch an application. Other features set up for it will be parity in protected memory with MacOS 1.4, more complete integration with servers, and the "secure computing initiative".

The MacOS has always run a few years ahead of Microsoft in most feature sets and ease of use, but that is no longer a reason to buy or not buy an OS. Fact is, Microsoft won the VHS / Beta war, and now the MacOS has become more of a Mercedes of computing to Microsoft's Ford. Likely each OS will me in the direction they are moving -- Microsoft to more centralized control of content, MacOS to more integrated content manipulation and deployment.

Some exciting things for Longhorn that I am waiting for is true plug and play (IEEE 1394 and USB will be integrated at the OS level and not add ons) and a new search and archiving system closely related to the MacOS search engine of OS9. In addition, many of the breaks left in the Microsoft OS from the days when it was fighting for monopoly will be fixed from the ground up.

Re: OS Jokes

true plug and play? so it will be alot like the macintosh right?
that would be nice. It won't be just like the mac but it will have mac traits. for one thing, true plug and play is useful. XP was doing a nice job for a while but still requires this driver, that driver. i'm sick of it.
but all in all, i think all computers are headed towards the same direction. then the only thing we worry about is preventing robots from taking over the world.

Re: OS Jokes

Correct me if I'm wrong. If I switched to Linux, I could use a windows shell to run my editing programs, right? I don't know that much about Linux, but that everyone at work uses it.

Well we won't know until Longhorn is released, which is currently 2008! Of course, if IE keeps hemmoraging security challenges, then it could be later I suppose.

personally, I like the continued competition... both sides win... which means we all win.
