Organizing Cases

My TrekPak case organizers came this week so I had a chance to go through a few cases to reorganize gear a little better. But I'm remembering a simpler time when everything fit in a single bag.

You guys doing anything different with your case inserts now?

The TrekPak stuff I got in fits the iM2500 size case. I have been experimenting trying to fit probably too much gear into a case. I managed to stuff those 10 lenses, a 2X doubler, lens cloth, & full set of 77mm screw-on filters in 3 pouches in that case:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG). Haven't really settled on a new camera yet Matt, been playing with a few but will probably continue to wait till the next round before I'm back into the camera buying game. Interestingly enough the camera we have been using the most lately is the 5DmkIII, as that full frame shallow DOF look is still real popular for commercials in my neck of the woods.

Dang, those cases are clean.

A few are newer cases Paul, but most of these ride in my truck and have never been shipped, but up close you can see a little wear. When I cleaned house a few years back and scalled down I got rid of my older cases used for shipping. Now those looked pretty!

Very jealous! My latest obsession is trying to streamline and cleanly separate all of my gear out into as few cases as possible/sensible.

I just wish pelican cases weren't so damned expensive.

What's the website for the dividers?

Same here. Now down to 20 hard cases!

But then again I still have to go through all the soft cases and bags, milk crates, so forth...

I keep telling myself that one day I'm going to cut my kit down to what fits in the back seat of a Porsche 911TT.

Never know, it may happen!

Here are a couple more shots, sorry for the crappy iPhone pics. These are carry-on size cases.
The neat thing about this stuff is how quickly you can reconfigure your case to reflect your shooting needs.

Personally i color code my cases. No black as it might get left behind - as it did once (!) - after dark. So ALL my cases are of varying colors.

Blue & Gray for lights
Desert Tan for camera gear

I'm a big sucker for efficiency. I just did a job with red and the package came in no less than 15 cases. It was a joke.
Your packing needs to reflect how you shoot. For instance putting all the lenses in one case is nonsense if you usually only use 3 out of 10 lenses. Put these 3 with the camera package! Ideally you want to put all necessary accessories in one case so in a basic scenario you can be up and running in no time. For camera you need: body, a standard lens or two, monitor, cables, maybe a mattebox and filters. For lights you want stuff that you use most in one case too. Put lights, basic stands, scrims etc in one case so when the PA brings only one case to the set you can to start improvising before the real stands show up.

Clearly label your cases so even if you ask a PA to bring something to the set he/she will know where to find it.
