Orchestra sound samples?

I apologize if this is the wrong area for this question. I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas on some really nice sounding orchestra plugins that can be used as VSTi or similar. Currently I use Garritan personal orchestra, within FL studio. But the quality just doesn't compare to a lot of what i've heard as far as digital music. Appreciate any info. Thanks!

I'd be interested in hearing some comments on this, as well. I use Personal Orchestra and sometimes it's amazing, sometimes pretty awful.

you could always check out www.soundsonline.com and, Project SAM just released a WONDERFUL sounding library of music called, SYMPHOBIA @ www.projectsam.com

My favorite strings are: www.sonicimplants.com and there's also some great stuff over at www.eastwestsamples.com (the silver is a great package)

good luck! If you have any other questions, i'll be happy to answer em'.

I second these suggestions. The Eastwest is very popular with pro composers and "mock-up" guys, and is also what I go to 90% of the time. Some of the samples are very specific articulations, so you need to use many different patches for a full orchestral piece, which is the reason it's not uncommon to see guys running these libraries on 2-10 computers dedicated to only playing the samples. (sequencer is on a different computer)

I myself, can usually run smaller orch pieces on my G5, but load-time is a bit$h. Start it loading and go make a sandwich.

Once you have the samples though, there's a lot of technique involved to make it sound realistic, including proper orchestration, expression with a volume pedal, expression pedal, or mod wheel, a good reverb setup, and good mixing.

For me, only Logic has a decent reverb. (space designer) most others sound like tin cans.

I think once you hear, and purchase some of these libraries, you will NEVER go back to the Garritan.

The other one to look at, but has more limited uses, IMO, is the Vienna Symphonic Library. Nice percussion section, (but I prefer the SAM library mostly), and their legato woodwinds are awesome for solo flute, and clarinet llines especially. (may only be available for Giga and EXS24, I'm not sure)

To run a lot of instances of any these (esp Eastwest) you need a pretty badass computer. RAID 0, fast drives, lots of memory, fast cpu. Otherwise you have to bounce tracks in order to use more. Pain in the a$$ when you want to work fast.

I've never used FL studio, but the original Fruity loops was pretty cool, and a nice program.

Ya I assume there are far better programs to use than FL studio, but I know all its workings and theres nothing that I can't really do with it (that I know of) so it works for me *shrug*. Appreciate it guys I will definitely look into those suggestions.

Garritan was a huge upgrade for me a couple years ago. I was using free soundfonts from hammersound.net but now even Garritan doesn't do it for me it sounds like mid 90's video game music where it has a slightly MIDIsh quality to it heh.

I'm running Core 2 duo E4300, 2GB ram and Creative Emu 0404, I hope I can handle these others.

don't have much experiense, but I once heard the phillarmonik orchestra library and it sounded pretty good. Not the best i'm sure, but its cheaper than the really good. Its probably better than personal orchestra.

Well I use VSL, Garritan Gofriller Cello, Garritan Stradivari Violin, Garritan Personal Orchestra and Edirol Orchestral. Sometimes I use them by themselves but most of the time i use them all together in different areas. To me, layering the plug-ins together give off a better sound.

my myspace site for my music.
