He should look at ALL the movies in the same club as Cop Out... his description of unfairly critical reviews don't apply to other flicks that are "just for laughs" yet may not get glowing reviews?

If you don't speak up for the other guys getting kicked in the face FIRST it's a lot harder to become the martyr after the same fate.

I think Twitter is going to be the worst thing to happen to Smith.

"Writing a nasty review for 'Cop Out' is akin to bullying a retarded kid. All you've done is make fun of something that wasn't doing you any harm and wanted only to give some cats some fun laughs."

Well at least he admits his movie is retarded, I saw it with a bunch of friends, we had a few laughs (not many, enough you could count on your 2 hands) but at the end of the movie all we could think about was how much of a waste of time and money it was to watch it.

It's odd that Smith repeatedly says his film is 'unambitious' and 'retarded', and then is surprised that some people don't like it. If Kevin wanted good reviews than he should have tried to make something with an ounce of ambition that isn't 'retarded'. People have better things to do with their time and money than to see some half assed attempt at a movie, especially when there's so many people out there who would give several body parts to get the chances he's had.

He makes a good point though, it's not cool bullying a retarded kid... we should just have a good time laughing at him instead.

I'll make some popcorn... go find us a 'tard.

It's one thing to be mentally challenged...it's quite another to act like one when you're not.

Let's be real here: Cop Out looks like Smith sold out for some big cash and a chance to work with Bruce Willis. The film is completely unlike anything else he's done and he didn't even write it. It's his red-headed stepchild film.

If people don't like it, why do you even care? You cashed your check, be happy!

There are critics out there who will give a good review to a movie that just tries to give you some laughs if it's actually successful in giving you some laughs.

I think the problem with "Cop Out" (and I"m just guessing because I haven't seen it) was that it set its sights low and then still didn't actually deliver what little it promised.

I understand being upset over the financial impact that poor reviews can have on one's bottom line.

But really, outside of purely business concerns who gives a flying f*ck what a mere critic has to say? Those who can't do, teach, those who can't teach, teach gym, and those who can't teach gym, become critics.

Sure, there are rarities like Roger Ebert, who has the intellect and education and skill to make his material interesting. But for the life of me I can't think of anyone else whose business it is to review movies who can be taken even 1/10th as seriously...

It's ridiculous. I haven't seen his new movie and don't plan to pay for it.
I've always found him to be a little overrated. He peaked a long time ago and he's been going downhill ever since.

I'll wait until it shows up on the movie network or something.

i've never seen another director given the benefit of doubt as many times as smith has. when you look at his body of work, it's mediocre at best. he was given so much credit for Clerks, but that was a different time and age, when micro budget filmmakers didn't have the resources they have now. the movie hasn't held up well and wouldn't garner nearly the attention it did if it was made today. because of Clerks, he was given the opportunity to make other, much crappier movies. smith needs to shut up and be thankful for what he has had and stop complaining about his movies not getting the credit he thinks they deserve.

I'm sorry, but aside from us and a select few people who really listens to critics? Unless it's a fellow film buff, people I know don't even know if a movie is being poorly reviewed or not. They just care about who's in it and if it looks flashy.

Not to mention that a lot of places have room for audience comments. RT has a 'community rating', which is giving cop-out a 50% as opposed to the 20% by critics. On one of my local movie theater websites there's a rating given by customers. Not to mention word of mouth.

Critics may be harsh at times, but hey, c'est la vie. I've had people call my work dribble before, and it hurt, and I went into denial, but I didn't lash out. It's about how you take criticism.

Then again I haven't made a Hollywood movie that got ripped apart by hundreds of critics... so can't say how I'd feel.

I don't know; the more experience I accumulate, the less interest I have in most anything critics have to say...

...Jon, I think people might have been suggesting that the work was drivel. To call your work 'dribble...' well, them's real fightin' words.
