Options in Place of P2 Cards?

What's to stop us future HVX200 owners from using a PCMCIA / CF Card Bus Adapter, and a current SanDisk 4GB Extreme III Compact Flash Card, in place of a Panasonic P2 card. According to SanDisk, the Extreme III series CF cards and sustain a 20MB/sec (thats MB!) sequential read and write speeds. Am I correct in thinking that those kind of data transfer rates are suitable for this new cameras HD content? Seems like a $500 solution, as opposed to the Panasonic P2 card prices. I do see the advantage(s) for the RAID config on the P2 cards (speed / redundancy), but the price difference is sure attractive...

P.S. 8GB "High Speed" cards will soon be READILY available, still at half the price of a P2 Card...
 
Hard to speculate until we actually see the cam but there's in theory no technical barriers to what you propose.

Sounds to me like P2 is not ready for prime time.

If they integrate a hard drive solution into the new camera, my DVX goes on the block. Otherwise, I'll just wait a couple of years until a new standard emerges.

No no, I am very sure, that there will be no built-in hard disk drive in the HVX. In actuality the HVX will be the greatest promotion of P2, Panasonic could have struck out.
 
I really doubt Panasonic would strike out with the pushing of the P2 media. I mean when you think about it tape just seems like a bad idea. This has the potential to be something really great. I also remember hearing that Sony was going to try and get out of the tape game also... whenever that's going to happen.
 
Just got back from a Sony Z1 demo at a dealer tonight and I asked him about the Panny and he said he's been told by the Panny rep that the new one will have a tape mechanism AS WELL as P2.

I think, there is a misunderstanding. I meant "to strike out" in sense of "to invent", "to think out", "to come up with".

From what you are saying, until the 8-GB CF cards come out, you don't gain much in capacity but only in price (maybe). But we don't know what Panasonic has in store.

As a side note, regarding alternative solid-state storage technologies, I expect more significant speeds -- and eventually capacities -- from the recently announced µcard format. It's SD compatible, can transfer data at 120 MB (megabytes) per second, and can theoretically address data capacities up to 2 TB.
 
My predictions. Along with the unveiling of the HVX200, will be 8GB and 16GB P2 cards and lower prices for the 4 GB

If you pre-order an HVX at NAB, you get your 4GB P2 card on the spot, which you can use to capture footage at NAB. You can take it home, examine the files, edit off of them, etc. Get your workflow down while you wait for the cam to be manufactured.

I have a question regarding the P2 card. Can I stick it on my PowerBook and read it? Or do I need a special reader?

do you have a PCMCIA slot in your powerbook? i think you don't. so i guess all you'll need is a PCMCIA drive.

All 15 and 17 inch powerbooks have a PC card slot.

Jan has already stated that 8GB cards will be available later this year. If a 16GB was going to be available too, I'm sure she would have mentioned it.
