Optimizing you settings to HD

Hi,

I have a GEFORCE 6600 LE that I use with Premiere Pro 2.0 on my AMD 64 DUAL CORE 3800, with 2giga of RAM and my Hd footage is still not realtime when I play it on the timeline. I surely must be doing something wrong, because I read many times that people with less powerful pcs could edit Hd real time. Is there any particular setting I should set the Geforce to? Is there anything I should do to the pc? There's gotta be something wrong.

HD usually has nothing to do with your video card. Bottlenecks are usually caused by disk I/O, and memory. Have you tried defragging? How many discs? How are they set up? Separate disks for system and media? RAID? Defragged?

At any rate, the first thing I would try would be defragging.

And which HD codec are you using?

What kind of hard drives do you have?
I have the BFG 6600GT, AMD 4000, 2gb mem, and a 250gb WD SATA2 hard drive. I can play the HD footage in real time but it's a little choppy. I think if you want real time you would need 2 hard drives in RAID 0. I also wonder if maxing the mem to 4gb would help.

Always keep in mind that HD and HDV is 2 seperate things as well. What type of HD do you have? Oh hey milvid, did you get my txtmsg as well? Plus, check out my latest podcasts at http://www.337studios.com

Sorry for hijacking like that, just wanted to say that to milvid.

But yeah, i got the Sony HC-1 HDV camera and thats alot different of HD than using the HVX or even higher end cameras!

I have a Maxtor 6L200MO and a Maxtor 7Y250PO that defrag on a regular basis (both 7200rps). It comes close to real time but it's not real time when it should be. There's a lot of people with less pontent pcs editing HDV real time. By the way, I'm using footage from a FX1E (pal/european version)

A couple of things you should be aware of, editing HDV natively is VERY processor intensive. There is a lot of misunderstanding regarding editing HDV. People who edited HDV in PPro 1.5.1 were not editing HDV, they were using a limited version of Cineforms AspectHD which converted the m2t HDV stream to an intermediate HD codec for post which significantly reduced the workload on the processor but equally raised the requirement for I/O from 25Mb's to 75Mb's/sec.

Editing HDV natively in any NLE is a bad idea. It is much easier [and cheaper] to scale your I/O than your processor. I'm editing HDV in PPro2 with AspectHD and a 500GB SATA RAID and get three to four realtime streams on a 3.4GHz HT P4 and 2GB RAM. I think I'd be lucky[ although I have not tried it yet] to get one stream of realtime performance trying to edit HDV natively.

If you have not tried it I'd suggest downloading the free trial of AspectHD 4 and capturing and editing with that to see how you like it.
