Optical looking vertical smears - eg Sunshine - Rihanna disturbia

Hey, I wanted to do something simular on a videoclip (and we don't have budget to shoot on film :p ) and I don't know if you allready found something, but i came across this effect. In Red Giants magic bullet looks there is a shutter streak filter, which creates something simular (even though there are some differences.)

A small test I did on a still: Before and after (plus some other fx, don't mind the differences in color etc,)

It reacts on the lights in the shots. You could keyframe the intensity in AE or FCP (or whatever you use) to make it more intense or make it disappear.

I'm still looking for a good method to make this streaks straight out of the lights. The streaks are now comming from the bottom and top of the shot.

I was going to throw Magic Bullet out there. It will emulate shutter streaking, anamorphic flares, etc.

It's easy to go overboard in Magic Bullet Looks. Djee's grab is pretty intense. I took a few scenes from a film I DP'd and applied shutter streaking to them.

This was from a test I did with the 5D Mk II when I borrowed one for a few days...

I don't consider these good examples of utilizing Magic Bullet's capabilities, but I also don't consider Magic Bullet the most amazing software for digital manipulation. The shutter streaking does look better in motion, but it's very easy to go overboard (as you can see with my first two examples)

Yeah it's a bit overdone in my grab, did that a bit on purpose to accentuate the effect, and the fx in Rihanna's clip is even more overdone.

But I agree, it's very easy to go overboard with all the posibilities in MB but it shure as heck is a great plugin.

If you like some of the effects you see using MB or digital renditions, then great... use 'em! But I just wanted to make an observation on the imitation of off sync shutter effect replications.

If you want to fool a professional into thinking it's an off shutter effect, it should really only go in one direction... although, theoretically, it might be possible to appear to do 'both ways', if the shutter is at an almost non-existent angle or even removed... but that is very extreme... probably not resulting in a very usable image but just smears everywhere.

All 35mm motion picture camera's I've used thread and run 'up' through the gate. Thus if you go back and watch Janusz Kaminski's off shutter work shooting with panavision cameras on saving private ryan, you'll see (especially with the fire shots around 2:51 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B02a7GhyAXA&feature=related that these off shutter movements don't go both ways from the point of the reflective or source lighting...

But if the reflected or source light is bright enough and close enough to the edge of the frame, it can leave a much more apparent ghosting trail in the adjacent frame. As the smearing is not only the old frame leaving, but the new frame arriving. You can see this with the bright fires in 3:01 of the SPR clip.

I don't use magic bullet, but if they labeled that effect 'off sync shutter' or meant for the effect to replace it, they didn't do their homework... but then again, their 'anamorphic flares' are a bit of a cheap thrill when compared to the real deal, in my opinion.

Ryan -

agree 100%, but is that in response to a screen grab you've seen here? Magic bullet's shutter streak only goes up and down.

In the case it was my last screen grab, I had toyed around with shutter streaking, diffusion, and faux anamorphic lens flares (manipulated to be white instead of blue). This is not a look I would use professionally, I was just dicking around with a 5d :)

If it was in response djee's screen grab, he as shutter streaking and anamorphic lens flare applied as well.

No, not your last screen grab. That is really subtle manipulation, which I appreciate! :) As far as I could tell from that grab, it looked like you had a varicon flasher or diffusion.

It was really in comment of the hallway shot from DJee (I know it was overdone, as he stated) and the one you posted with angry shadow man. Those have the smear originating and moving away from the point of light in both directions.

EDIT: Actually, now that I look closely at it, it seems it fades a bit in certain areas. I guess i need to see it in movement to determine the exact way it is rendered. But if you say that it only goes up and down, then they need to re-evaluate their script. Some people may like it better that way, so I would recommend they make it an option to turn on or off. That way, OCD people like me can have it the 'right way' and others can have it as they wish.

BTW, Trudd,

Ask Panavision about their PV to Cannon mount. I know it exists, and i've seen pictures from PV Hollywood doing tests with it on their floor. I'd be happy to go halfsies with you and rent an anamorphic lens or two to play around with on a 5D.

Well, I'm a bad friend and didn't tell you I moved back to Texas recently...surprise! When I fly back, though, you're on. Aren't you overseas ATM?

I tried to do a more subtle effect on my "shadow man" grab...I think it lacks the contrast for the filter to work well, but here's another shot...

Okay, I'll stop thread crapping after this. Part of the problem is I'm taking a screen grab of a heavily compressed file, so MB Looks isn't working with the greatest sample...

comparison - original, shutter streak #1 and shutter streak #2....

EDIT dvxuser uploading isn't working...consider this my placeholder...

Yeah, I'm in England shooting a docu this summer. I'll be back late to mid August, but might be going to HongKong & South Africa (+ some other places), so just give me a call whenever you get back to LA. I'll bother PV Woodland Hills about the PV/Canon mount when I get back.

As for your sample, the smearing will be more obvious, the brighter the exposure and in conjunction with contrast... because it will expose the negative in a less amount of time.

Janusz Kaminski was partially inspired by the idea of an off sync shutter from another film in which it was used in conjunction with fire. The film was Full Metal Jacket by Doug Milsome, BSC.

Thanks Ryan, I think I'm getting it now, love the way the smears from the top of the frame (eg sky) are bleeding over into the bottom of the next frame (I can see it now in the Rhianna video too). That's something that I can easily recreate. Thanks for all the pointers.
