Opinions on secondary camera purchase

I've been thinking of buying a cheap miniDV camera to use for tape rewinding, capturing, etc., so as to use the heads of my DVX less. Anyone else done this? Anybody think it's a good or stupid idea? Opinions relatively soon are greatly appreciated.

I have rarely used tape. I've had DVRack for a long time. No wear and tear on the camera's recording heads, no tape drop out, no bothering with capture systems as recording is capturing, waveform monitoring - zero exposure problems, vectorscope - great color to start with, savings of thousands of dollars by needing almost no tape at all for anything.
