I think you should do it. Then again I am the guy who wrote and directed the first indy film for Apple TV so my advice may be a little bias. But David Progue is a big Mac-head so check his review of it out: http://video.nytimes.com/video/2007/03/22/technology/1194817115872/apple-tv.html

I have a blu-ray player so I don't really use the Apple TV much, however, if you don't already have any sort of HD playback device and would use the iTunes rentals I would think that it is worthwhile. You can also upload slideshows from iPhoto and go on YouTube with it, which is pretty cool.
I've been thinking of taking it to wedding expos that I do for my video business. It would make a great playback device for those kinds of things. It is small so should be easily portable if you need to take it with you to show footage to clients and friends.

The AppleTV is a great device, especially since you can mod it with xbmc and such and still retain all original functionality. Highly recommend it.
