Opinions from my shoot using the Brevis35-MC, Redrock M2 and SGpro Rev. 3

marco0782 - send us back your unit. There should be no wobbles or any need to make the adjustments you describe. We'll take a look at it. If it's a broken adapter, it's not surprising you aren't getting sharp results.

As for battery, I'm surprised since our tests show a regular household 9v battery lasts over 30 hours.

Also, the M2 loses at most 1 stop of light (we've tested this pretty thoroughly using spot and incident meterings), so I don't see how an adapter could lose "a stop less than the M2" and still obey the laws of physics :)

Thanks

Brian

Honestly Brian, I love what you and Redrock are doing, or have done, but the results you describe here are something I never achieved to accomplish as well when I used the M2. That might be theoreticaly true what you are stating there, but I doubt those results in the field. I, for one, have never been able to get that out of an M2.

Marco,
Did you mention what camera you were using? Was it an HVX? I think your description of the general differences between those adapters rings correct to me. Individual results sometimes vary with cameras and individual adapters but all in all I agree.
Also I agree with Aerialsfilm, though I never had a loose screen wobbling around in my M2 (so that's maybe a more personal experience) it definitely never got near 1 stop light loss so I'm not sure how that was measured. Mine also was not as sharp as the others , but it seems that some people have gotten very sharp pictures from the M2 so there may be more variability there.

I used an HVX200. I noticed that shooting with a fast shutter speed (i.e. 130-degree) increases the sharpness dramatically. Even with that, however, the M2 was still much softer than the other two adapters. Like Brian said, it's possible that the adapter I was using is broken. Certainly the wobble shouldn't be there.

I don't believe the 1 stop loss for the M2. I wish I had the time to test the three adapters under identical conditions but based on my experience the M2 loses more than that. It's not half a stop away from the Brevis, that's for sure.

Hi Brian,

I too never got the M2 to perform as good as the SGpro. The wobbling was always an issue no matter what we adjusted. And we never got edge to edge sharpness. We also had to zoom in quite a bit. Now to be fair, we never contacted Red Rock...we just got frustrated that we never got the results we expected from day one and after 8 months of fiddling with the M2 and talking to other users having the same exact issue....we switched to SGpro Rev3 and everything worked right away with absolutely no adjustments (except adding one shimm). Edge to edge sharpness is there and setup is extremely easy. Don;t get me wrong I like the product that Red Rock is coming up with and I am on the list to purchase the new remote focus and Matte box, I just personally think the M2 is no longer the best or up to par with other 35mm adapters in its price range. (just my opinion...not a slam) :)

Marco, thanks for posting your observations. Your comments on sharpness and light efficiency are pretty much in line with what our customers are experiencing. The Brevis with a 35mm lens stopped down to f8 has been demonstrated (Phil Bloom's review) to be as much as 3-4 stops more efficient than the spinners you used.

1. We're now shipping the Brevis with our latest CFLe which dramatically improves performance with slower wide angle primes and zoom lenses. Marcus Burnett made these comments after dropping the new imaging element in for a National Geographic series he just finished.

2. The Brevis-to-rails mount is an incredibly stiff clamp and ties the carbon chassis of the Brevis unit to 15mm rails. When used in this mode (on rails like the M2 and SGpro) it should be rock solid. That said, if you are seeing flex in the run 'n gun mode, then something's not right as the carbon/CNC aluminum is as stiff as it gets!

Aerialsfilm M* - to what are you referring? We take measured results in controlled shooting situations.

If you have problems and don't contact us, our hands are a bit tied in helping to resolve issues, but we are here and ready to help.

It's just we never achieved edge to edge sharpness and we kinda tried everything. We did not contacted you guys at the time since we noticed many people had the same problems. Also light loss was more than on the sgpro, although I do not recall how much.

But once again, the M2 is a very good product, it is just not what we were looking for.

Hey guys,

I used a Nikon (and Tokina) 20-35mm F2.8 perfectly on Brevis CF1Le (no vignetting whatsoever)...I havent yet tested it with my hv20 and CF1.

I just bought the Canon FD mount and my friend has a whole swag of these lenses so I'll be testing them in next few days. (24mm, 16mm, 300mm etc.)

All the D.O.P/cinematographers that have used my brevis have been amazed. Even those who have used the P+S 35 were amazed at the quality.

Another film coming up this week. Will post stills.

Tom, this stuff is music to our ears. You should get similar performance from the HV20....just make sure you pop in CF1 for that.
