Opinion: Hired a videographer, I thought he sucked. What do you think of footage?

So the only abiters of good music are trained musicians, the only abriters of good food are trained chefs, and only film school graduates are capable of deciding what constitutes a good film. I think we'll haveto agree to disagree on this one Patryk.
Yes but no.
The judges of good music in abstract sense are indeed only trained musicians, and so on with your examples. But in real sense it's everyone with ears. That said only trained musician will be able (we would hope) to justify their claims coherently beyond, as i said already, "i like this." Moreover the context of the judgement matters too. For instance in abstract sense the OP's video is good but it's not in relative terms that he choses to use (and as it's a small no-name band that noone cares about the relative terms might be more important that getting to the essence of is the footage indeed good or not).

in philosphical terms, making this type of statement is commonly known as "bullshitting". :2vrolijk_08:

Ok, I didn't graduate from a film school, does that mean I can't comment?

Next time, there are only a few must haves to make this better.

#1 you must have some kind of wide shot for cut aways, pick a POV camera and mount it in the back or side or something.

#2 you must have better audio, hopefully on both cameras so you can try to sync them.

For even better results:

#3 more POV cameras on other parts of the stage or clamped onto instruments, but again you need good audio for sync. Get a bunch of the little buggers and put them everywhere, just make sure you can lock the white balance to a standard so it won't drift with the light changes. You don't need expensive GoPro for this, first generation JVC Addixion are actually pretty decent cameras and best of all is you can hose them down at the end of the night, they are waterproof to 10 feet with no special housing.

I found this footage to be garbage and unusuable, even only using short bursts/clips.

I'd have to go ahead and agree with you. His framing and camera handling makes little sense to me. I'd suggest that he's not at all a cameraman of any kind ("video person" what?) I used to shoot live bands years ago and never got paid anything like $200. to be there rolling for a set or two. And it doesn't matter how much you paid the guy. It's not like there's a pay scale that starts at crap and goes up to excellent. Crap is still crap.

This is very good.

The threadstarter overpaid, but you underpaid. How would you make ends meet if you deliver videos like that for $200 each?

Thanks for the compliment....In reality I actually "overpaid" as well as he wanted to do it at no charge. He wanted to try a music video for his reel cause he never tried a music video. He does a lot of city street timelapse stuff. But once I saw what he put together I had to compensate the effort somehow....or else I felt I was taking advantage

By underpaid, I didn't mean that you ripped him off. In fact, that was of course very generous of you to pay him $200 when he offered to do it for free.

I meant that if his only job was making videos, and if he wanted to work just 40 hours a week, and if all his videos were of that quality, and if he charged everyone $200 for videos of that quality and length, then he would be living in poverty.
