Operating HD without a monitor

Is it possible? Could one get by with only the camera's focus assist?

As a high school student, I really don't have a lot of money to throw around. I was thinking about using my 19" computer monitor for some situations, but I realize the majority of the time that's not going to be an option. Is it possible to get by without dropping $700 on a screen?
 
You can get by w/o an external monitor, yes. Look at Disjecta's footage - all shot using the camera LCD (at least I think most of it is...) - takes ALOT of practice but you can get to the point where using focus assist and just learning how the LCD translates to actual footage works. Over on HV20.com they're modding a $250 Samsung LCD panel to work in a housing that can be mounted - 15" I think - could be an option if you're looking for inexpensive monitoring solutions.

If it's 15 inches, why not get a 15 inch computer LCD monitor? It's not widescreen, but it's cheaper and takes less work.
