I pretty much always use the top handle and operate looking at the LCD - it is too hard to operate glued to the eye cup - I find it constrictive and it tends to inhibit freedom of movement when you are handheld.
camera out front.. lcd in normal flip out position. elbows in tight to body(very important.. ads stability, and less arm fatigue) right hand in strapped handhold, left hand with thumb underfront left flat corner of bottom and index finger on focus/zoom.

I got a phone call when I was making that poll and rushed to finish it...

I tend to use both, the same as if i was shooting Betacam, DVCAM or any other format. Eyecup, color lcd ( if the camera has one), and a seperate monitor. I think each one can be used to reference different things yet one may show you something your not seeing on the others.
I try to use eye peice because I shoot on film alot and if I take my eye off the eye peice without closeing it light will reflect off the mirror and onto the film... and then I get fired the next morning
