Opening 4.5 project on 5.1

Hello

I sent a 4.5 project via email to someone who has 5.1(German version) and he cant open it.
Should I assume it simply wont accept it or one of us is doing something wrong?

Im helping him capture it and send the project with all the offline files to him so he can batch capture once he gets the tapes.

Is it possible to send a FCP project email and have the recipient open it in his MAC no problem?

Well the details are
I have FCP 4.5
He has a German version of 5.0
the error message he translated simply said cannot read file
He has a macbook

You can go from 4.5 to 5.0, but not from 5.0 back to 4.5.
Are you emailing only the project file, what about the capture files?

I have opened 4.5 in 5.0 recently and it worked for me. It was all on the same computer after an upgrade, so maybe the German version has something to do with it?

Yea, Im guessing the german version has something to do with it. but something simple as transfering offline files (time code stuff) should be except from language requirements but oh well, it is what it is I guess.

Thanks man

Is it possible he's using FCP Express?
I've done the same thing here in the US (going from 4.5 to 5) numerous times - and haven't had a problem yet.

sounds odd - let us know if you figure out the issue.

Ok, clarify for me what you mean by "offline files." I have a suspicion. List all the files you email to him, as I may have an answer for you, but I want to make sure before I say anything. Feel free to PM them to me if you're more comfortable with that.

Only thing I can think off is that it's a language issue. You could do a search on Apple's support site, too.

As far as him working "offline" and then batch captureing to go back "online", well, that really won't work. You explained to me that you send him the FCP Project file only, plus tapes to re-capture, expecting the FCP Project to automatically set the media to work "offline". Nope, not how "offline" works.

If he could get the project to open, and there are no capture files anymore, all media would have red slashes through it, and the only thing he'd see when editing in the Canvas is a screen saying "Media Offline", as there would be no media for FCP to generate an image from. Thus, no way to actually edit anything.

"Offline" means you're working with a low res copy of the footage, not that you have no footage captured. No captured footage is a project with missing media files, not "offline." Two very different situations.

You have to put the whole project on a hard drive, capture files and all, then send that to him. Otherwise, without the actual capture files you already have, FCP won't have any images to show for editing.

At work we moved from 5.0.x to 5.1.x and none of our 5.0.x project files would open in in 5.1.x (we got the "project too new" error of all things). So we had to make XMLs of the projects we needed and open them up that way.

Something's not right. I've never heard of this problem before.

We have 12 machines (some PPC some Intel) and everyone of them got the error when we tried to open a 5.0.x project. IIRC we have 3 new machines that came w/5.1.x and the rest were upgraded in Dec. If they were all upgraded at the same time I'd guess it might've been a bad install.

It's water under the bridge now, but I am curious as to what's going on. Especially since I just got my UB crossgrade in the mail and I'm nervous now about moving from 5.0.x to 5.1.x.

I did a straight upgrade, did the whole deal, no problems. Don't "Customize" an upgrade, just let it run totally default.

Just sent an FCP project to a fellow Apple Trainer in Switzerland, using a German language Mac, and he was able to open my U.S. English project just fine. Of course will all the media missing and all.

I just dug out an old 4.5 project I had archived away. Opens in 5.1.2 just fine, although it demands I upgrade the project.

What is your hardware setup? Specifically RAM, hard drives, and graphics card?

Can't find anyone who's heard of this problem before. Wish I had a fix for you.

Ok, new insight. A fellow Apple Trainer is having problems moving an FCP project created on an Intel Mac to an PowerPC Mac. Do any of you with these problems fit this situation?

Source file must be sent as well

Source file must be sent as well

Enve if you do send a FCP file, you have to support it by sending the sourece files, or they will not be able to open it. I have opend 4.5 files in 5.1.2. all the time.

Good luck.

Well, just clarified the PPC/Intel problem is an XSan specific issue.

There's no known bugs for this. Projects should open reguarless of language. Projects from older versions of FCP will open in newer versions of FCP just fine. I've posted to other Apple Trainers, no one is aware of this problem.

I really wish I could come up with an answer, but it's simply rare, if you're going from any older version to a newer version of FCP.

With no media files the Project will still open just fine. All you media will simply have red slashes through it in the Browser and FCP will warrn you there is a ton of missing media. That's all.
