Does anyone know what kind of cameras were used to film Open Water...It looks extremely DV. I saw the preview in theatres and the 35mm blow up looks terrible..Very digital...What the hell is it about anyway? Looks cool, and kinda weird..
I wrote the director and he responded telling me this much about the film..
"sony vx-2000 and sony pd-150. budget was around $130,000. no cg, no stunt people. all the sharks in the film are real, live, and the actors are in the water with them.
shooting w/a Sony VX about people swimming w/sharks,no CG, and no Richard Dreyfuss cost $130,000, and then the guy running show was quoted as wishing he had a ($3500) DVX cam? Robert Rodriguez could've filmed the sharks playing the guitar and shooting other sharks for less than a quarter of that budget--in fact, we ALL could have made 10 shark movies with budget!
Alot of the budget probably went to the transfer to film. The director probably sent plenty of copies to plenty of film fests and that costs money. I am sure a lot of the budget was for the transfer.....
you're right about the film transfer(a HUGE gamble, when they could've shown distributors a video version)and that's probably where 80-90 of the budget went to--but $130,000?! If I were able get funding for even half that budget, my first movie getting into Sundance wouldn't be about sharks. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . unless, they were EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-EVIL sharks ;D
Hell, 1,000 would be better than what I got now...
Other than my DVX, the last short I did cost about 100 bucks or so- and it didn't look cheap at all. We had lighting and such that most people think it looks exactly like film...
I think if the mojority of the $130 for film transfer is a bit excessive..even at $600 per min. But everything cost money these days....food for crew, accomodations, equipment, etc..etc..etc.
