Open Source Digital Cinema Camera based on Elphel

I didn't have seen any thread on this. So I start one. Unfortunately I'm not either an engineer or programmer, so the only thing I can do for those guys is trying to get some aboard. I know that there are some technical gifted people on this forum.

The project originates back to 2001. It's all open source (hardware and software). The current bottleneck seems the sensor. Panavision Dynamax 35 37mpx sensor looks to be one of the proposing future sensors which starts at $1.1k.

The camera is internet browser based so everything from a PC to a tiny mobile device is possible to control the camera.

I really like the movement and read from the specs it is the dream come true camera.

If you think you can push this foreward get in contact.

And if not, please inform others about it.

The times have never been better to build your own camera.

- Kodak KAI-2150 CCD (http://www.kodak.com/global/plugins...summary/Interline/KAI-02150ProductSummary.pdf)

- SDXC memory cards

- Google Android. I haven't heard anyone else mention this, but Google's mobile operating system may be a great fit for camcorders. It would support touch screen, recording to flash media. It already includes the encoding and decoding of MPEG-4 (although actually video recording is still in the works) http://code.google.com/android/

Interesting sensor!

Currently we are using 1.8" HDDs or CF cards for recording. SDXC cards look indeed promising for the future.

I was actually considering some kind of Moblin based Linux live OS that would boot directly into the viewfinder software.

Attached is the concept / screendesign for the viewfindersoftware called "Elphel Vision".

Nice but it all just seems to technical for me. I thought about investing in a Sumix camera solution but after assembling a list of PC parts and everything needed, plus what it would be like on set, I just thought I might as well forget it. Granted, it did come out cheaper or at least around the same price as a low end prosumer camera.

There's a lot of potential here, especially with the specs on the newer sensors, but the biggest problem, for me anyway, is that there doesn't seem to be an easy, simple to use, and accurate GUI control interface. The one Sebastian posted looks rather nice, I hope that actually turns out.

I'd love to see this out there. I hope the GUI is really intuitive and touch screen. Like what people have mentioned before with the google andriod OS. This would be some serious competition for the next generation cameras. I bought my dvx for 2100. If in the future I could make a 2k camera with a interchangeable lens system for ~2500. I would seriously consider it. Especially since I'm already on the linux and open source wagon.

We are planning several hardware accessories to give users the handling experience they are used to from prosumer/professional rigs.

The touchscreen for the GUI mentioned a few posts ago might not fit everybodies way of working so there will also be an interface called the "Dictator". See attached concept.

Everything open (source) hardware of course.

We are working on a project website at the moment so stay tuned.

Hi Sebastian,

The Elphel and your software is exceptional - just become involved with the project and waiting on delivery of a 353. We are going to be working on a simple programme for rapidly filming and compiling EnvMaps of scenes to make it super easy for compositing 3Ds. Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 is that okay for your software?

Best wishes,

John

Sorry for the lack of updates to this forum, actually we have quite a lot to report considering my last post here is already 10 months old:

-) The DNG Converter is available to convert JP4 RAW movies to a DNG sequence: http://www.apertus.org/dng-converter

-) We have our own dedicated forum now: http://apertus.org/forums

-) We now also have a facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Apertus-Open-Source-Cinema/164090853620504

OK, I can't think of anything else for now but I am sure I forgot something. Maybe I will remember it for the next post :)

.Interesting project. I'd seen this last year but hadn't followed it too closely. Hopefully if this can find a bigger community it will grow even more.

Any plan of a big S35 type of sensor? It might cost more, but an S35 raw camera would appeal to a much larger audience.

There are some thing in that relation going on currently behind the scenes but stay tuned for the official announcement (I hope soon).

Some more progress to report:

-) A new Apertus film is completed: Open Land
Watch it here: http://apertus.org/en/node/136 and read more about it

-) We are working on a totally new Apertus website with better
structure, nicer layout and improved readability: http://dev.apertus.org/
and its being discussed here: http://apertus.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=99

-) We now have a dedicated bug/issue management system:
http://bugs.apertus.org/thebuggenie/elphelvision/timeline as discussed
