only in my dreams?

Mino

Northern Dreamer
So this is what’s happening, It’s so strange I can only turn to you guys for suggestions and helpful insights. This has been going on for the past few nights. I’m starting to wonder what it all means…if anything. I have these dreams at night that seem to go on all night but as I understand it probably only take a few minutes to happen. After the dreams I wake up to a semi groggy state and realize that the dream I just had is a perfect script idea. I’m too freaking tired to get up and record it and promptly fall back to sleep. When I finally am able to stumble towards my morning smoke and coffee ritual, the script / dream has become quite fuzzy….the main idea seems somehow lost to me, though it was crystal clear at three am when I woke up groggy. I’m a guy who doesn’t dream much and when I do its usually just bits and pieces of madness that make absolutely no sense at all. But the last few have been mind boggling. My question to you is, does anybody have a good idea or known/practiced method of getting these thoughts recorded so they can be flushed out at a later time. I wouldn’t be bringing this up at all if I hadn’t recognized the incredible nature in some of these nocturnal ramblings / gifts I seem to be getting. Does any one else experience this sort of thing?

Re: only in my dreams?

Yes, I've experienced that many times. If you think it's a good idea, then keep a pen and some paper near your bed, so that when you wake up half-groggy, you can scribble down a few key words or phrases to help jog your memory later on.

Re: only in my dreams?

That's what I do, but my notes usually end up being fairly strange when I look at them later.

Re: only in my dreams?

I usually write only after midnight. The creative juices just seem to flow better then.

Re: only in my dreams?

You're side tracking me here Shaw, but yes I feel the same way. All my best creative work happens in the magic hours between midnight an six am roughly. Always makes me wonder why companies that require creative efforts from their emloyees don't opperate during these hours instead of 9-5 sort of thing...or maybe they do and I'm just unaware. I'm gonna side track again because I just remembered it, It might help those who want to write but can't (writers block) Some of the most profound things I've ever written have started by taking a blank piece of paper and writing whatever comes to mind like "Balloons are good but don't fly well without peanut butter or chomping for no reason is better than shopping at walmart for fish". That sort of thing. Sometimes, if I'm lucky (half a dozen times now) I find myself caught up in an Idea that seem's to flow from god knows where and I can barely keep the rapid fire of thoughts going to paper, I simply can't write that fast. I just wish I could do that with these dreams because some of the stuff is really good.

Re: only in my dreams?

Dreams have a logic of their own. Something that makes perfect sense in that groggy state right after you wake up often end up being total gibberish leter . . . :D

Re: only in my dreams?

Like the great insights we used to have when we smoked pot years ago that we wrote down and coulld'nt make any sense of next day? I am accutely aware of that but really hoping it's not the case with these dreams. But in thinking about it, and fearing that to be true, I'm at this mpment tackling it this way. So the dream was gibberish, but left me impressed enough with it's vague content to be able to take the parts I have retained and use those as a foundation for a script and hopefully the more I dwell on this, the meat of the dream will find its way back to the foreground of conciousness and leave me with a workable script idea? Does this make any sense at all?

That is *so* true... as Horse noted, too.

Re: only in my dreams?

Mino even better then a pad and papper, a little mirco recorder. Cheap as borsht, and all you have to do is click one button and yap. Plus it is highly entertaining to listen to later on. Just do not let the tapes get in the hands of evil doers.

Somewhere in one of the drawers here I still have the note I wrote after dreaming the perfect film.

Since it was very late, and I was still very tired, I just jotted down what I thought was essential.

So. If anyone can figure out what I meant by "Snorting Lockie", I'd really appreciate it.

That's not a bad idea, but I'm afraid my girlfriend can't understan a word I say before my third cup of cofee(takes me forever to come back on line in the am) so right out of a deep sleep into a micro recorder probably would need a team of SETI scientist and six months to decipher.

Snorting Lockie....Damnit , now I've got a huge coffee stain on by fav shirt and I almost choked to death...That was too funny ;D ;D

Re: only in my dreams?

Mino, Green tea on my monitor right back at ya.
We could create the Mino AM decoder ring.  But this one you do not get in a box of Captain Crunch.

Re: only in my dreams?

Ditto about the dreams having their own logic...though sometimes my dreams are so vivid that I still remember the images very clearly. There was once I dreamt that I was running up a building to see something. As I ran higher and higher, I knew that I was going to see something wonderful. I got to the top and stepped to the nearest window, I realized I was in a tall office building. and behold, I saw a giant, brilliant golden tornado, flashing white and red tearing up the middle of a huge metropolis. It was so beautiful. It rotated slowly yet powerfully, kicking up all sorts of debris, - despite all the chaos, it was very relaxing to watch.

when I dreamt this, I remember waking up and saying, "holy cow" - it was incredibly clear and for some reason, I can still see that image in my mind as if it really happened. If ever my FX skills become good enough, I will film and animate a scene like that...

Re: only in my dreams?

Here's a link for tips to help remember one's dreams. The guy is a ph.D dream researcher. His motivation in remembering dreams is to learn to dream lucidly; that is, to control dreams to do whatever one may want in dreams, effectively creating an alternate to our waking reality during sleep. The tips should help anyway, though.
